High-dose radiation exposure of cold-stored whole blood does not affect hemostatic function

Sandra C. Becerra et al.

Summary: Stored irradiated whole blood showed minimal changes in function and was still suitable for transfusion even after exposure to high radiation doses. Although there were significant changes in potassium and sodium ion concentrations after irradiation, it had little to no effect on hemostasis and blood cell viability. This suggests that irradiated blood could be used in mass casualty events where a large amount of blood is needed.

Operation of a TCA cycle subnetwork in the mammalian nucleus

Summary: This study reveals the operation of a part of the Tricarboxylic Acid (TCA) cycle in the nucleus and its close association with core nuclear proteins. This challenges the conventional view of metabolic compartmentalization.

Deformability of Stored Red Blood Cells

Gregory Barshtein et al.

Summary: Red blood cells' deformability plays a crucial role in adapting to flow conditions, with high deformability facilitating flow through small blood vessels. Loss of deformability may lead to cell rigidity and dysfunction.
