Accuracy of Tests for Diagnosis of Animal Tuberculosis: Moving Away from the Golden Calf (and towards Bayesian Models)

Summary: In the last few decades, efforts have been made to develop new diagnostic tools for tuberculosis in animals to improve disease control and eradication. However, there is still uncertainty about their performance due to varying estimates published in scientific literature. This study performed a systematic review using Bayesian Latent Class Models (BLCMs) to evaluate tuberculosis diagnostic tests in animals. BLCM-based estimates differed from previous reports, especially for in vivo tests and sensitivity estimates. The use of newly developed models can help generate unbiased estimates of test performance.

Risk factors and true prevalence of bovine tuberculosis in Bangladesh

Summary: Bovine tuberculosis is endemic in Bangladesh with a true prevalence of 21.9% at the animal level and varying from 41.9% to 88.8% at the herd level in different regions. Risk factors for bTb include herd size, grazing status, breed of cows, and presence of cough symptoms. Surveillance and control programs should target crossbred cows that do not graze and show cough symptoms, while herds in specific regions like Mymensingh, Sadar, and Bhaluka need special attention. Utilizing Bayesian hierarchical true prevalence estimation can help identify high-risk areas for targeted intervention.

The study also highlights variability between abattoirs in the detection of bTB lesions and identifies animals at increased risk based on various factors.
