Design of Lu2O3-reinforced Cf/SiC-ZrB2-ZrC ultra-high temperature ceramic matrix composites: Wetting and interfacial reactivity by ZrSi2 based alloys

Peter Tatarko et al.

Summary: The wetting and infiltration behavior of molten ZrSi2 alloys into C-f/SiC and B4C-infiltrated C-f/SiC composites are affected by Si evaporation and overall porosity. Composites with lower porosity show better wetting and spreading of the alloy on the surface, while composites with higher porosity exhibit the formation of an outer dense layer followed by a uniform infiltrated region. Lu2O3 particles are not wetted by the melt and are pushed away by the solidification front during the reaction process.

Phase structure of sputtered Ta coating and its ablation behavior by laser pulse heating (LPH)

Yunsong Niu et al.

Summary: The phase structure of sputtered Ta coating in the negative glow space and the low-frequency pulse effect were explored. The microstructure of Ta coating remained intact after the low-frequency pulse course, with only a few cracks appearing, while the electrodeposited Cr coating experienced extra micro-cracks due to continuous thermal stresses.

Effect of loading spectrum with different single pulsing time on the cyclic ablation of C/C-SiC-ZrB2-ZrC composites in plasma

Lei Liu et al.

Summary: Adjusting single impacting time to perform cyclic ablation with different loading spectra in alternate plasma combustion and compressed air flow provides insights into the characteristics of C/C-SiC-ZrB2-ZrC composites in high frequency pulsing fluid at ultra-high temperatures. Increasing loading time resulted in a sharp rise in ablation rates, with incremental changes in surface temperature. Ablation morphology indicated a shift from mechanical erosion to chemical reaction as the dominant ablation mechanism, leading to the significant increase in ablation rates.

Effect of PyC interface phase on the cyclic ablation resistance and flexural properties of two-dimensional C-f/HfC composites

Tao Feng et al.

Summary: Composites based on hafnium carbide reinforced with continuous naked carbon fiber, with and without PyC interface treatment, were prepared at low temperature. Results showed that samples with PyC interface had better cyclic ablation resistance and lower decrease in bending strength, attributed to the protective and weakening effects of PyC interface on fiber and fiber/matrix interface.

Active brazing of C/C composites and single crystal Ni-based superalloy: Interfacial microstructure and formation mechanism

Xiajun Guo et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the joining between C/C composites and single crystal Ni-based superalloy using active brazing with AgCuTi filler, revealing the formation of a continuous reaction layer and various intermetallic interactions. The highest shear strength was achieved by brazing at 880 degrees C for 10 minutes, showing promising potential for aerospace applications.

Ablation resistance of HfC-TaC/HfC-SiC alternate coating for SiC-coated carbon/carbon composites under cyclic ablation

Guanghui Feng et al.

Summary: Alternate coatings of HfC-TaC/HfC-SiC with different sublayer thicknesses were fabricated on SiC-coated carbon/carbon composites, showing the best ablation performance due to the dense oxide layer and stress release from dendritic cracks. Additionally, exfoliation at the interface of adjacent sublayers in some coatings led to violent evaporation of exposed sublayers.

Microstructure and cyclic ablation behaviour of a Si-Mo-Ti protected C/C composites by a two-step method

Wei Sun et al.

Summary: The two-step method of combining reactive melt infiltration and slurry coating was used to fabricate completely protected C/C composites. The presence of a SiC transition layer, obtained through this process, helps improve the cyclic ablation resistance of the composites, with the best results achieved when the chemical composition of the mixed powder used in the slurry coating process is n(Si):n(Mo):n(Ti) = 8:1:3.

Xiaofei Zhu et al.

Summary: A gradient composite coating was designed and prepared to enhance the oxidation resistance of C/C composites at mid and high temperature, incorporating SiO2 gradient distribution to inhibit coating cracking and forming a dual-layer structure with outer dense layer and inner microporous layer. ZrSiO4 particles were used to stabilize SiO2 glass, resulting in improved oxidation resistance and thermal shock resistance of the C/C composites.
