Visual recognition for urban traffic data retrieval and analysis in major events using convolutional neural networks

Yalong Pi et al.

Summary: This paper presents a computer vision-based framework for analyzing traffic data, which can accurately and timely provide traffic volume counts and intersection turning patterns. The framework achieves a high accuracy of traffic volume counts up to 96.91% according to the experimental results. Factors such as lighting condition, pixel size, and camera angle are analyzed to improve the accuracy of counts. The framework is validated in the context of Texas A&M University football games.

Risk to workers or vehicle damage: What makes drivers slow down in work zones?

Ashim Kumar Debnath et al.

Summary: The study found that drivers' perceived likelihoods of injuring workers and damaging vehicles strongly influence their speed choices in work zones. Young and middle-aged drivers tend to nominate higher speeds compared to older drivers. Additionally, drivers who hold truck licenses and encounter unpaved or loose road conditions are more likely to nominate higher speeds. Visibility of workers in work zones leads to lower nominated speeds by drivers.
