Associations between serum polychlorinated biphenyls, halogen flame retardants, and renal function indexes in residents of an e-waste recycling area

Ling-Chuan Guo et al.

Summary: E-waste handling activities release PCBs and HFRs, which pose a high exposure risk to local residents. This study found that exposure to PCBs and HFRs was associated with renal injury indicators, such as f32-MG, BUN, SCr, and uric acid, and thyroid hormone-related genes were found to mediate these associations. The interaction of PCBs and HFRs with metals also affected renal function. High concentrations of PCBs and HFRs were linked to increased risk of early renal injury in adolescents. These findings highlight the importance of protecting the health of individuals living in areas impacted by e-waste handling activities.

The antiestrogen-like activity and reproductive toxicity of 2,6-DCBQ on female zebrafish upon sub-chronic exposure

Weiyi Song et al.

Summary: This study found that exposure to 2,6-DCBQ can cause reproductive impairments in female zebrafish, including delayed puberty onset, retarded ovarian growth, and breakdown of the zona radiata. In contrast, no adverse impacts were noted in male testes. The results suggest that these effects may be associated with a significant reduction in 178-estradiol (E2) level induced by 2,6-DCBQ.

Disinfection byproducts in chlorinated or brominated swimming pools and spas: Role of brominated DBPs and association with mutagenicity

Hannah K. Liberatore et al.

Summary: The health effects of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in pool water, such as asthma and bladder cancer, are linked to swimming. This study compared the concentrations of DBPs in brominated and chlorinated pool and spa waters and identified the DBPs most associated with mutagenicity. The results highlight the importance of brominated DBPs in the mutagenicity of these recreational waters.
