Endothelial shear stress signal transduction and atherogenesis: From mechanisms to therapeutics

Lei He et al.

Summary: Atherosclerotic vascular disease and its complications are leading causes of mortality globally. Studies have shown that endothelial cells are influenced by low or disturbed shear stress at curvatures and bifurcations in the arterial tree, playing a role in the formation and development of atherosclerotic plaques. Understanding mechanosensitive signaling cascades may offer new translational strategies for therapeutic intervention of atherosclerotic vascular disease.

Human CD16+ monocytes promote a pro-atherosclerotic endothelial cell phenotype via CX3CR1-CX3CL1 interaction

Eva Roy-Chowdhury et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of CD16(+) monocytes on endothelial cell function in patients with kidney failure. It was found that CD16(+) monocytes can modulate endothelial gene expression, potentially increasing cardiovascular risk in individuals with renal impairment. The study suggests a mechanistic link between CD16(+) monocytes and atherosclerosis in the context of renal failure.

Endothelial Dysfunction in Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Diseases and Beyond: From Mechanism to Pharmacotherapies

Suowen Xu et al.

Summary: The endothelium, a cellular monolayer lining the blood vessel wall, plays a critical role in maintaining multiorgan health and homeostasis. Dysfunction of the vascular endothelium is associated with various diseases and is implicated in severe coronavirus disease 2019. Therapeutic approaches targeting endothelial dysfunction may have potential for treatment of cardiovascular and many other diseases.
