The Impact of Age- and Sex-Specific Reference Ranges for Serum Thyrotropin and Free Thyroxine on the Diagnosis of Subclinical Thyroid Dysfunction: A Multicenter Study from Japan

Sayaka Yamada et al.

Summary: This study investigated the age- and sex-based differences in serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroid hormone levels in euthyroid individuals. The results showed that using age- and sex-specific reference ranges can avoid over- or underdiagnosis of subclinical thyroid dysfunction.

Comparison of 8 methods for univariate statistical exclusion of pathological subpopulations for indirect reference intervals and biological variation studies

Rui Zhen Tan et al.

Summary: This study compares the performance of eight statistical methods in identifying and excluding data from pathological subpopulations. The Kosmic method, Vdl method 1, and Tukey's rule perform the best. High proportions and spreads of pathological subpopulations lead to reduced performance in statistical exclusion. It is important for laboratories to use clinical criteria to minimize the proportion of pathological subpopulations before analysis and choose the appropriate statistical method.

The Effects of Common Genetic Variation in 96 Genes Involved in Thyroid Hormone Regulation on TSH and FT4 Concentrations

Rosalie B. T. M. Sterenborg et al.

Summary: This study identified novel genetic variants associated with thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroxine (FT4) concentrations through a large-scale candidate gene analysis. However, the candidate gene SNPs only explained a small portion of the variation in TSH and FT4 concentrations, highlighting the need for larger genetic studies to uncover novel pathways in thyroid hormone regulation.

RIbench: A Proposed Benchmark for the Standardized Evaluation of Indirect Methods for Reference Interval Estimation

Tatjana Ammer et al.

Summary: This study developed a benchmarking suite called RIbench for evaluating and comparing the performance of indirect methods in estimating reference intervals. Through the evaluation and comparison of several modern indirect methods, the results showed that these methods outperformed the direct method when the pathological fraction was below 20% and the sample size exceeded 5000.
