Design of sheathed built-up nested CFS channel studs in load-bearing LSF walls

Son Tung Vy et al.

Summary: This study investigates the compression behavior and capacity of light gauge steel framed walls made of slender nested channel studs sheathed with gypsum plasterboards. The results show that the plasterboards and screw connections between the stud and board significantly affect the failure mode and compression capacity of the sheathed stud. The recommended end fastener groups and stud-to-stud screw connections have only marginal effects. A simple and conservative design method based on the Direct Strength Method equations is proposed.

Fire resistance of external LSF walls with corrugated steel cladding

Jashnav Pancheti et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the details of full-scale standard fire tests of external LSF walls with corrugated steel cladding exposed to fire, and evaluates the fire and energy performance through thermal property tests and THERM modelling. Results show that the use of corrugated steel cladding delayed temperature rise and increased fire resistance levels, significantly impacting the FRL and energy efficiency of the system.

Design of cold-formed steel wall studs subject to non-uniform elevated temperature distributions

M. Rokilan et al.

Summary: This paper first investigates the accuracy of the current design rules for cold-formed steel studs in wall systems subject to non-uniform elevated temperature distributions, and then simplifies the calculation process without compromising accuracy. It also improves the accuracy of the current design equations. The paper then explores the possibilities of using uniform temperature based design equations for non-uniform temperature distributions and proposes a simplified design method.

Screwed connections in built-up cold-formed steel members at ambient and elevated temperatures

Son Tung Vy et al.

Summary: This research study investigates the shear behavior and capacity of screwed connections used in built-up cold-formed steel (CFS) members. The results indicate that the design equations for tilting and bearing capacity in current CFS design standards are reliable for screwed connections at ambient temperature. The study also proposes reduction factor equations for elevated temperature capacities.

Design of built-up back-to-back CFS channel compression members sheathed with gypsum plasterboards

Son Tung Vy et al.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility and performance of using built-up back-to-back cold-formed steel channel (BC) members as studs for light gauge steel framed (LSF) walls. The results show that screw connections have marginal effects on the compression capacities of the sheathed BC members, while the plasterboards and stud-to-board screw connections effectively prevent in-plane flexural buckling and improve the compression capacities of the members. Furthermore, the Direct Strength Method combined with the guidelines proposed in this study provides a conservative prediction of the compression capacities.

Fire tests of cold-formed steel walls made of hollow section studs

Yunxiang Tao et al.

Summary: The fire resistance of LSF walls made of SHS/RHS studs has not been investigated yet, restricting their use in mid-rise buildings. However, cold-formed steel SHS/RHS stud walls achieved a higher fire resistance level compared to LCS stud walls, especially when used in cavity insulated walls.

Numerical study of LSF walls made of cold-formed steel hollow section studs in fire

Yunxiang Tao et al.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical study of cold-formed steel square and rectangular hollow section (SHS/RHS) stud walls in fire conditions, highlighting the advantages of using SHS/RHS studs in cavity insulated stud walls. Advanced modelling techniques were used to explore the effects of sheathing and localised plasterboard fall-off on the behavior of walls in fire.
