Silica-Supported Nanoscale Hydrotalcite-Derived Oxides for C4 Chemicals from Ethanol Condensation

Raju Kumar et al.

Summary: We have demonstrated that the surface nature of nanoscale hydrotalcite-derived oxide (HTO) can be controlled simply by adding amorphous silica during material preparation. This modification leads to the formation of ternary Mg, Al, and Si interfaces and enhances the chemically accessible aluminum (Al3+tetra) as acidic sites. The modified HTO/SiO2-X catalyst shows different catalytic performance in the ethanol condensation reaction, with HTO promoting 1-butanol production and HTO/SiO2-5 favoring 1,3-butadiene production. This difference in catalytic performance can be attributed to the redistribution of acidic and basic sites upon the newly formed ternary interfaces.

Ethanol Conversion to Butadiene: A Thermodynamic Analysis

Ionut Banu et al.

Summary: This review article examines the thermodynamics of ethanol conversion to 1,3-butadiene, showing that equilibrium ethanol conversions up to 80% can be achieved even with positive standard Gibbs free energy changes. The inclusion of secondary products in the calculation schemes reduces the process yield at equilibrium, indicating kinetic control. Additionally, the process of producing butadiene from an ethanol-acetaldehyde mixture is slightly favored thermodynamically compared to direct ethanol conversion.

Carbon-Supported Mg-Al Oxide Hybrid Catalysts for Aqueous Ethanol Conversion into 1-Butanol in a Flow Reactor

Olga Larina et al.

Summary: Carbon-supported Mg-Al oxide hybrid catalysts were prepared and characterized for aqueous ethanol conversion into 1-butanol, showing enhanced catalytic activity and stability over time on stream compared to Mg-Al oxides when using both rectified and aqueous ethanol as feed. The redistribution of active sites of the Mg-Al oxide phase over a highly dispersed support was suggested to be the cause of the enhanced activity of the hybrid catalysts.
