Maximum principal strain criterion for fracture in orthotropic composites under combined tensile/shear loading

M. M. Mirsayar

Summary: This paper presents a strain-based criterion for investigating mixed-mode I/II fracture behavior in orthotropic materials. The criterion predicts the onset of mixed-mode I/II fracture by considering the T-stress effect and singular terms, and explores the role of T-stress in the fracture toughness assessment. The accuracy of the proposed criterion is evaluated by predicting fracture test data for wood species and laminated composites, and it is shown to be superior to other criteria in predicting the onset of mixed-mode I/II fracture in orthotropic materials.

A suitable mixed mode I/II test specimen for fracture toughness study of polyurethane foam with different cell densities

D. M. Imani et al.

Summary: Rigid foam materials can experience catastrophic failure under mechanical loads due to low fracture toughness. A suitable test specimen called Asymmetric Edge Notch Disc Bend (AENDB) was proposed for conducting mixed mode I/II fracture experiments on polyurethane foam, with finite element analyses used to determine the stress intensity factors. Experimental results showed that increasing foam density can improve the fracture toughness data for all mode mixities, while the AENDB specimen exhibited lower mixed mode fracture curves and initiation directions compared to other test samples.

Summary: This article proposes a Semi-theoretical criterion for assessing the fracture of composite materials. The criterion utilizes experimental data under mixed-mode I/II loading to accurately predict the fracture behavior of orthotropic materials. Fitting experimental data into the criterion improves the accuracy of fracture estimation.

In-situ optical approach to predict mixed mode fracture in a polymeric biomaterial

Saeid Ghouli et al.

Summary: This article promotes the usage of digital image correlation (DIC) technique for determining in-situ stress and predicting fracture in cracked dental biomaterial samples. The elastic and fracture properties of the dental material are measured using DIC method, and a modified single edge notched bend (SENB) specimen with varying crack length is utilized for mixed mode fracture experiments. A stress-based fracture criterion is implemented and combined with two different critical distance models. In-situ stress is calculated using DIC analysis data and supervised learning algorithm, and the crack growth angle and fracture load for the tested biomaterial specimens are estimated, showing good correlation with experimental measurements.

Summary: This research adapts the maximum strain energy release rate concept to predict the fracture response of orthotropic materials under mixed-mode I / II loading, investigating the effect of crack initiation angle on fracture behavior. By validating the Adaptive Maximum Strain Energy Release Rate criterion, the fracture behavior of orthotropic materials is extracted and the accurate prediction of crack initiation angle is proven.

Applying the new experimental midpoint concept on strain energy density for fracture assessment of composite materials

Zahra Khaji et al.

Summary: A mixed-mode I/II fracture criterion, called Improved Strain Energy Density with Mid-point (ISEDM), is proposed in this paper to predict the fracture response of composite materials. The criterion takes into account the physics of fracture onset and different damage mechanisms near the crack tip. By considering the effects of the fracture process zone (FPZ) and T-stress, the ISEDM criterion accurately predicts the mixed-mode fracture process, especially when mode II is dominant.

An extended maximum tangential strain energy density criterion considering T-stress for combined mode I-III brittle fracture

Wen Hua et al.

Summary: This study modified the MTSED criterion to consider stress intensity factors and T-stress for combined mode I-III brittle fracture. The influence of Poisson's ratio and T-stress on fracture characteristics of cracked components was discussed, showing significant effects on fracture resistance ratios, especially for pure mode III. Positive T-stress increases fracture resistance ratio while negative T-stress has the opposite effect. Predicted values by the extended MTSED criterion agree well with testing data, particularly for pure mode III cases.

Summary: A combined stress/energy-based criterion has been developed to predict mixed mode I/II fracture behavior in laminated composites, taking into account the effect of fiber bridging toughening. The criterion shows a higher correlation in predicting experimental data, offers a simpler computational method compared to energy-based criteria, and considers the effect of absorbed energy from micromechanical fiber bridging in the solution.
