Tectonic evolution and subsidence history of the Cretaceous basins in southern Egypt: The Komombo Basin

Moamen Ali et al.

Summary: This study presents a detailed analysis of the tectonostratigraphy of the Komombo Basin in the Cretaceous rift basins of southern Egypt. It reveals that the Komombo Basin shares a similar rift history, stratigraphy, and structural style with the Kharit, Nuqra, and Muglad basins.

Trans-dimensional gravity and magnetic joint inversion for 3-D earth models

Emad Ghalenoei et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new non-linear Bayesian inversion method to address the limitations of conventional regularized inversion. The method utilizes trans-dimensional partitioning and estimation to resolve subsurface structures and reduce error correlations in 2-D potential-field data. The method is applied to simulated data and field data, demonstrating its effectiveness in resolving structures and reducing error correlations.

Joint gravity and magnetic inversion with trans-dimensional alpha shapes and autoregressive noise models

Emad Ghalenoei et al.

Summary: Typical geophysical inverse problems are challenging due to their ill-posed nature and non-uniqueness. Deterministic inversion methods often apply constraints to parameter values, but this may limit inference on complex structural boundaries. Bayesian trans-dimensional approaches offer adaptive parametrizations and can avoid over-parametrization or under-parametrization. However, they depend on the choice of partitioning types and involve trade-offs between spatial resolution and correlated data errors. The presented hierarchical model incorporates trans-D parameterizations for both spatial and data noise, providing a more comprehensive uncertainty quantification that considers the trade-offs between noise and structure.

Crustal structure of the United Arab Emirates and northern Oman Mountains from constrained 3D inversion of gravity and magnetic data: The Moho and basement surfaces

Meixia Geng et al.

Summary: The basement morphology in the United Arab Emirate (UAE) and northern Oman mountains varies significantly, with the density model showing a smoother and deeper basement, while the susceptibility model indicating a less smooth and shallower basement, possibly due to the presence of magnetic intrusions.

Hormuz salt distribution in the United Arab Emirates: Implications for the location of hydrocarbon fields

Meixia Geng et al.

Summary: In this study, the structure and distribution of the low-density Hormuz salt in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were delineated using a 3D constrained layer inversion method on the residual gravity anomaly of the sedimentary layer. The inverted model revealed that the Hormuz salt is more widespread offshore than onshore UAE, with a thickness ranging from 1000 to 4000 m. The study also identified a low density shallow layer and several hydrocarbon fields associated with the Hormuz salt.

Tectono-Stratigraphic Evolution of the Foreland Fold-and-Thrust Belt of the United Arab Emirates

A. Abdelmaksoud et al.

Summary: The subsurface and surface structural geometries of the UAE fold-and-thrust belt and foreland basins were studied using seismic, well data, and surface geology. The study revealed the transition of the Arabian margin from a rifted passive margin to a foreland basin, with major inversion of rift faults in the northern region and possible basement origin in the southern region.

Gravity and magnetic joint inversion for basement and salt structures with the reversible-jump algorithm

Emad Ghalenoei et al.

Summary: Gravity and magnetic data can resolve the Earth with variable spatial resolution, showing both discontinuous and gradual features in Earth structure. Model parametrization complexity should be able to adapt locally to the resolving power of the data to address non-uniqueness in joint inversion.

3D constrained inversion of gravity and magnetic data to image basement and plutonic bodies: A case study from Dood Arale Basin, eastern Somaliland

Mohammed Y. Ali et al.

Summary: A 3D inversion model has been developed in eastern Somaliland, revealing the characteristics of the Dood Arale Basin and providing information on the geological structure within the basin. The model shows the presence of two main subbasins and several smaller and shallower subbasins, with varying uncertainty in basement depths across different regions. The presence of magnetic bodies and high geothermal gradient in the basin may be influenced by plutonic complexes within the area.
