Detailed Imaging of a Seismogenic Fault That Potentially Induced the Two 2019 Weiyuan Moderate Earthquakes in the Sichuan Basin, China

Guanshen Liu et al.

Summary: Induced earthquakes have become a significant issue, particularly in shale gas fields located in the southwestern Sichuan basin, China. Two moderate earthquakes with magnitudes exceeding the largest earthquake ever recorded in Weiyuan have recently occurred in this region. The seismogenic faults responsible for these events remain unclear due to insufficient knowledge of the subsurface structure and contradictory hypocenter depths obtained from different seismological methods.

State of stress in areas of active unconventional oil and gas development in North America

Jens-Erik Lund Snee et al.

Summary: This paper presents comprehensive data on stress orientation and relative magnitude in areas where unconventional oil and gas are being developed in North America. The study finds agreement in maximum horizontal principal stress orientations and observes different styles of faulting and S-Hmax directions in different basins. The new data sets improve operational efficiency and enable the prediction of fractures and faults likely to be activated during hydraulic stimulation.

Three Mw ≥ 4.7 Earthquakes Within the Changning (China) Shale Gas Field Ruptured Shallow Faults Intersecting With Hydraulic Fracturing Wells

Shuai Wang et al.

Summary: Three destructive earthquakes occurred in the Changning shale gas field in the southwest Sichuan Basin, China from 2017 to 2019. These earthquakes were most likely induced by direct injection of pressurized fluids into fault zones. The earthquakes mainly ruptured sedimentary formations above the shale gas bed, with slip magnitudes ranging from 8.5 to 15 cm.

Seismic reflection analysis of the deeply buried Neoproterozoic rift basin beneath Sichuan Basin, southern China

Jing Hu et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the structure and evolution of an underlying Neoproterozoic rift basin in the Sichuan Basin, based on seismic reflection data and magnetotelluric data. The preliminary hydrocarbon conditions in the rift basin are characterized, and the study provides important insights for deep hydrocarbon exploration in China and worldwide research on Neoproterozoic rift basins.

Initiation of Clockwise Rotation and Eastward Transport of Southeastern Tibet Inferred from Deflected Fault Traces and GPS Observations

Weijun Gan et al.

Summary: The eastward transport and clockwise rotation of crust dominate active deformation in the eastern region of the Tibetan Plateau. GPS measurements indicate ongoing distortion of the active Red River fault and the Mesozoic Yalong-Yulong-Longmen Shan thrust belt. The inferred pattern of deformation developed since approximately 10.1 million years ago, coinciding with various tectonic phenomena within the wider Eurasia/Indian collision zone.

Earthquakes Triggered by Fluid Diffusion and Boosted by Fault Reactivation in Weiyuan, China Due to Hydraulic Fracturing

Minhan Sheng et al.

Summary: This study enhances our understanding of induced earthquakes by hydraulic fracturing by providing evidence from seismic data in the Weiyuan shale gas block in China. It confirms that the earthquakes in this area are induced by hydraulic fracturing and identifies pre-existing faults near the clusters. The study also suggests that fluid diffusion processes are the primary drivers of seismicity in this region.

Summary: The 2021 M-W 6.0 Yangbi, Yunnan strike-slip earthquake occurred on an unmapped crustal fault near the southeast margin of the Tibetan Plateau. The rupture propagated unilaterally southeastward, with a relatively low radiated energy and intense foreshock and aftershock activity.

Tectonic evolution of the Sichuan Basin, Southwest China

Shugen Liu et al.

Summary: Surface deformation in the Sichuan basin is influenced by two weak extension and compression episodes, leading to the formation of specific structures. The evolution of the basin appears to be controlled by deformation from its peripheral orogens rather than deep lithospheric and mantle processes.

Heterogeneous Interseismic Coupling Along the Xianshuihe-Xiaojiang Fault System, Eastern Tibet

Yanchuan Li et al.

Summary: Using GPS and InSAR data, we quantified the interseismic coupling along the Xianshuihe-Xiaojiang fault system, confirming left-lateral strike-slip motion and the end of long-lasting surface creep. Our results show that moment deficit for Mw > 7 earthquakes has accumulated along the Anninghe, Zemuhe, and Xiaojiang faults.

The Community Velocity Model V.1.0 of Southwest China, Constructed from Joint Body- and Surface-Wave Travel-Time Tomography

Ying Liu et al.

Summary: The study aims at building a high-resolution community velocity model (CVM) of crust and uppermost mantle in southwest China by joint inversion of body- and surface-wave travel-time data to address the issues of consistent earthquake locations and velocity models. The resulting VP and VS models show two low-velocity zones in the middle-lower crust and a prominent high-velocity region. These new models serve as the first version of the CVM in southwest China for future studies.

Seismogenic Faults of the Changning Earthquake Sequence Constrained by High-Resolution Seismic Profiles in the Southwestern Sichuan Basin, China

Renqi Lu et al.

Summary: Seismic activity in the Changning area of southwestern Sichuan basin, China, has significantly increased since 2014, possibly due to salt mining or shale gas exploration. The study reveals the characteristics of seismogenic faults and the well-developed pre-existing fault system which makes the region vulnerable to induced earthquakes. The reactivation of basement fault system highlights the unstable state of the local tectonic stress field, potentially increasing seismic risk in the area due to industrial activities in the southwestern Sichuan basin.

Spatial-temporal evolution of injection-induced earthquakes in the Weiyuan Area determined by machine-learning phase picker and waveform cross-correlation

Wing Ching Jeremy Wong et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic induced seismicity has been widely studied, particularly in regions such as the shale gas fields in the Sichuan basin where earthquake frequency has increased substantially since fracking began. Using machine learning and waveform cross-correlation, researchers have detected an increase in earthquakes and improved the completeness of earthquake catalogs, shedding light on the spatial-temporal migration of seismic activity. The highly clustered seismic patterns suggest a causal link between emerging seismicity and hydraulic fracturing activities in the region, providing valuable insights for further investigation into seismic induction mechanisms and associated risks.
