A timeframe for mint evolution: towards a better understanding of trait evolution and historical biogeography in Lamiaceae

Jeffrey P. Rose et al.

Summary: Lamiaceae is a large and economically important family of flowering plants. In this study, the relationships within the family were clarified using a new dataset and divergence times were estimated. The results provide important secondary dates for the family and highlight the need for further study of certain subfamilies.

Phylogeny and biogeography of the northern temperate genus Dracocephalum s.l. (Lamiaceae)

Ya-Ping Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the phylogenetic relationships, diversification patterns, and biogeographical history of the Dracocephalum genus and its related genera Hyssopus and Lallemantia. The results show that Hyssopus and Lallemantia are actually nested within Dracocephalum, and Dracocephalum can be divided into nine well-supported clades. The genus experienced rapid radiation during the middle to late Miocene and originated in Central and West Asia before dispersing into the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and adjacent areas twice independently during the Pliocene.

Plastome sequences fail to resolve shallow level relationships within the rapidly radiated genus Isodon (Lamiaceae)

Ya-Ping Chen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships within Isodon, especially in Clade IV, using plastome sequences with a broad taxon sampling. Results showed congruent topologies among 12 data sets, recovering major lineages of Isodon but also revealing incongruences among data sets and single plastid loci. These incongruences are likely due to insufficient phylogenetic signal, hybridization, and plastid capture, highlighting the need for additional nuclear genome data to resolve relationships within Isodon.

An updated tribal classification of Lamiaceae based on plastome phylogenomics

Fei Zhao et al.

Summary: A robust molecular phylogeny of the mint family, Lamiaceae, was established at the tribal level using plastid genes. This updated classification system and phylogenetic backbone will facilitate further studies on mint classification, biogeography, and diversification.

Sage Insights Into the Phylogeny of Salvia: Dealing With Sources of Discordance Within and Across Genomes

Jeffrey P. Rose et al.

Summary: Advancements in next-generation sequencing technologies have allowed for new phylogenomic approaches to clarify relationships within Salvia. Despite gene tree discordance, nuclear and plastid genomes exhibit congruence in delineating Salvia's relationships at both broad and species levels. Horizontal gene flow has been identified as an important factor in Salvia's evolutionary history.

Systematic Placement of the Enigmatic Southeast Asian Genus Paralamium and an Updated Phylogeny of Tribe Pogostemoneae (Lamiaceae Subfamily Lamioideae)

Fei Zhao et al.

Summary: Paralamium is a monotypic genus within the subfamily Lamioideae, belonging to the tribe Pogostemoneae and sister to the monotypic genus Craniotome. The study also discusses the generic-level phylogenetic relationships within Pogostemoneae and provides a dichotomous key for genera within the tribe.

A preliminary phylogenetic study of Paraphlomis (Lamiaceae) based on molecular and morphological evidence

Ya-Ping Chen et al.

Summary: Paraphlomis is a genus of Lamiaceae with about 30 species mainly distributed in subtropical China. The study revealed that the genus is not monophyletic, and nutlet morphology is more important for its classification based on morphological and molecular evidence.
