Revealing the differences in collision cross section values of small organic molecules acquired by different instrumental designs and prediction models

Lidia Belova et al.

Summary: The number of open access databases containing experimental and predicted collision cross section (CCS) values is increasing, which is important for compound identification. However, the reproducibility of reference values with different instrumental designs and the comparison between predicted and experimental CCS values is still being evaluated. This study compared experimental CCS values of 56 small molecules acquired by both drift tube (DT) and travelling wave (TW) ion mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS). The results showed good correlation between the datasets of the two methods. Prediction models based on artificial neural networks (ANN) and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) were also found to be applicable for the prediction of CCS values. Recommendations for database transfer and applications of prediction models are provided for future studies.

Chromatography hyphenated to high resolution mass spectrometry in untargeted metabolomics for investigation of food (bio)markers

Leticia Lacalle-Bergeron et al.

Summary: There is a growing demand to increase knowledge about the quality of food and its relationship with health and disease. Untargeted metabolomics approaches are powerful tools for exploring metabolic changes, with potential in the food field. Advanced analytical techniques like high resolution mass spectrometry are necessary for covering a wide range of metabolites in complex samples.

Novel sampling strategy for alive animal volatolome extraction combined with GC-MS based untargeted metabolomics: Identifying mouse pup pheromones

Leticia Lacalle-Bergeron et al.

Summary: This study identified 11 mouse pup volatiles potentially involved in maternal care induction in adult females using dynamic headspace and GC-MS techniques. The comparison between neonatal and elder pups revealed specific compounds and enrichment of palmitic acid in older pups. The results demonstrated the potential of the new sampling procedure combined with GC-MS for volatile pheromone identification in mammals.
