Transferability between soil organic matter measurement methods for database harmonization

E. V. Shamrikova et al.

Summary: Soil organic matter (SOM) is an important factor in soil formation, but its chemical composition is not fully known. Traditional methods for estimating SOM, such as the Tyurin and Walkley-Black oxidation methods, have led to inconsistent results and different conversion factors. This research aimed to develop equations for converting SOC determined by the Tyurin method to more widely used methods like WB and DC. A comparative analysis using quality control and field soil samples showed that the conversion factors for WB and Tyurin methods were 1.15 and 1.30, respectively. The measurement error of both methods did not exceed 20%. These findings contribute to the integration of data analyzed by different methods into a comprehensive database for monitoring soil quality and carbon stocks.
