Surface currents in operational oceanography: Key applications, mechanisms, and methods

Johannes Rohrs et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the physical mechanisms, observation techniques, and modelling approaches for surface currents on short timescales relevant to operational oceanography. The article addresses the fundamental difficulties in reliable measurements and the lack of consensus on the definition of surface currents. It distinguishes between four applicable definitions and discusses the challenges in synthesising observational and modelling data of surface currents. The paper concludes by evaluating the predictability of surface currents in an operational context.

Can Multi-Mission Altimeter Datasets Accurately Measure Long-Term Trends in Wave Height?

Ian R. Young et al.

Summary: A long-duration, multi-mission altimeter dataset was analyzed to evaluate its accuracy in measuring long-term trends in significant wave height. Two calibration methods were investigated, with the altimeter-altimeter approach showing larger positive trends globally. However, both methods are affected by temporal non-homogeneity between altimeter missions. The study concluded that the accuracy in determining trends in significant wave height is limited to approximately +/- 0.2 cm/year. The sampling pattern of the altimeters was also examined, and it was found that under-sampling can bias trend estimates at the 99th percentile level, but not significantly at lower percentiles (90th and mean).

Correlating Extremes in Wind Divergence with Extremes in Rain over the Tropical Atlantic

Gregory P. King et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the correlation between wind divergence and rain in the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) of the Atlantic Ocean using ASCAT satellite wind fields and Meteosat satellite rain fields. The results show that extreme rain is associated with extreme convergence/divergence in the vicinity. Statistical analysis reveals the odds ratio peaks and time lags for extreme convergence and divergence, indicating that extreme rain usually appears after extreme convergence. The study also demonstrates the consistency between the observed patterns and the known structure of MCSs. The findings suggest that ASCAT winds are well suited for air-sea exchange studies in moist convection.

Towards Retrieving Reliable Ocean Surface Currents in the Coastal Zone From the Sentinel-1 Doppler Shift Observations

A. Moiseev et al.

Summary: This study improves the accuracy of geophysical retrievals using Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar-based Doppler shift measurements in the open ocean by calibrating and partitioning the signal between wave and current contributions. The results suggest that satellite attitude and antenna pattern have significant effects on the Doppler shift observations, which can be reduced through recalibration. An empirical function (CDOP3SiX) is developed to estimate the sea-state-induced Doppler shift, which improves the accuracy of sea state contribution estimates and allows for the detection of ocean surface currents and mesoscale eddies in the coastal zone.
