Summary: The addition of RE can effectively refine the microstructure of the alloy, but high RE content may lead to less effective grain refinement and the appearance of coarse dendritic microstructure. Extrusion results in fragmentation and dispersion of intermetallics, as well as significant grain refinement due to recrystallization processes.

Surface modification during hydroxyapatite powder mixed electric discharge machining of metallic biomaterials: a review

Himanshu Bisaria et al.

Summary: Surface modifications are crucial for the performance of bio-implants. Powder mixed electric discharge machining (PM-EDM) is an advanced method that can simultaneously machine and coat the surface of conductive materials. Hydroxyapatite, a bio-ceramic with bone-like composition and excellent biocompatibility, can be deposited on implant surfaces using the electro-thermal process of hydroxyapatite powder mixed-EDM (HAp-EDM). This review article meticulously evaluates the surface characteristics of an implant after HAp-EDM, including surface morphology/topography, micro-hardness, phase analysis, recast layer, elemental composition, corrosion/wear resistance, and biocompatibility. The review also explores future research opportunities for HAp-EDM in meeting the high standards of biomedical materials and their applications in bio-implant manufacturing.
