Vibration fatigue performance improvement in 2024-T351 aluminum alloy by ultrasonic-assisted laser shock peening

Xiankai Meng et al.

Summary: In this study, ultrasonic-assisted laser shock peening (ULP) was proposed to improve the fatigue resistance of 2024-T351 aluminum alloys by combining ultrasonic shock peening (UP) and laser shock peening (LP) techniques to enhance the microstructure and mechanical properties. The microstructure, residual stress, microhardness, and vibration fatigue life of four different specimen types were tested and analyzed. The results showed that ULP significantly increased the dislocation density and refined the grains, leading to higher compressive residual stress and microhardness, which inhibited crack initiation and propagation, and thus greatly increased the vibration fatigue life.

Assessing the efficacy of several impact-based mechanical techniques on fatigue behavior of additive manufactured AlSi10Mg

Erfan Maleki et al.

Summary: Post-processing methods are often necessary to reduce issues associated with internal and external anomalies in additively manufactured products. Choosing the right post-treatment and corresponding parameters is challenging and requires consideration of material type, geometry, size, and cost. This study investigated the efficacy of four pure impact-based mechanical operations on fatigue behavior, and found that ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) had a considerable improvement on fatigue performance at a reasonable cost.

Post-building successive treatments using surface laser remelting and ultrasonic nanocrystalline surface modification for rough surface built via directed energy deposition

Seung-Yeong Cho et al.

Summary: In this study, surface laser melting (SLR) and ultrasonic nanocrystalline surface modification (UNSM) were used as post-building treatments to improve the surface of additively manufactured parts. The experiment showed that the roughness and waviness of the as-built surface were significantly improved by the successive treatments of SLR and UNSM. The combination of a small overlap SLR and UNSM was found to be effective in maximizing the effect of UNSM. SEM and EBSD analysis revealed that grain refinement occurred in a deeper region in the SLRed-UNSMed samples compared to the samples solely treated with UNSM. Pole figure analysis indicated that SLR allowed the UNSM energy to be transferred more evenly and deeper. SLRedUNSMed samples exhibited high hardness, compressive residual stress, and increased effective depth of UNSM compared to UNSMed samples. Based on these findings, SLR followed by UNSM can achieve surface modification and improve the mechanical properties of additively manufactured products.

Fatigue failure mechanisms for AlSi10Mg manufactured by L-PBF under axial and torsional loads: The role of defects and residual stresses

F. Sausto et al.

Summary: Additive Manufacturing (AM) is the most revolutionary manufacturing process developed in the last two decades. The poor surface quality of net-shape components, the presence of internal defects, and the development of process induced residual stresses are the main challenges for the fatigue strength of critical stressed components. This work investigates the failure mechanisms under torsion in the presence of manufacturing defects, both volumetric and superficial anomalies, and explores the competition between internal defects and superficial features and their effect on the fatigue performances. The study found that manufacturing residual stresses play a key role in influencing the fatigue strength of net-shape specimens, and the fatigue limit in torsion under different loading conditions is comparable.
