Preparation of TiNbTaZrMo high-entropy alloy with tunable Young's modulus by selective laser melting

Junyi Feng et al.

Summary: Biological high-entropy alloy (Bio-HEA) is a promising biomedical alloy with excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Selective laser melting (SLM) technique is used to fabricate dense blocks with low Young's modulus and good compression property at room temperature. Triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) lattice in the HEA structure, with Young's modulus close to that of human trabecular bone, allows for customization of shape and porosity, enabling Bio-HEA to meet various bone implant requirements.

Effect of electroshocking treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of laser melting deposited near-β Ti-55531 thin-wall

Yan Wen et al.

Summary: In this study, the near-beta Ti-55531 alloy was manufactured using laser melting deposition (LMD) and followed by electroshocking treatment (EST). The microstructure evolution before and after EST was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that EST could reduce the orientation concentration and weaken the texture of the beta phase. XRD results indicated a slight increase in the alpha phase content after EST. The mechanical properties were improved after EST, including an increase in microhardness, yield strength, and tensile strength, which was attributed to the variation of the microstructure. Overall, EST is an effective approach for optimizing the microstructure and improving the mechanical properties of LMD near-beta titanium alloy.

Metastable pitting corrosion behavior and characteristics of passive film of laser powder bed fusion produced Ti-6Al-4V in NaCl solutions with different concentrations

Yu-Wei Cui et al.

Summary: This study investigated the metastable pitting corrosion mechanism of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) produced Ti-6Al-4V. The passive films of samples were produced by potentiostatic polarization in NaCl solutions with different concentrations, and electrochemical measurements were employed to understand the influence of Cl- on the characteristics of passive films. The frequency of pitting nucleation and the pit dimension increase with increased Cl- concentration. The attack of Cl- promotes the dissolution of passive films, resulting in the formation of pitting corrosion due to the condensation of voids caused by the ingress of Cl-.

Precipitation of bone-like apatite on plasma electrolytic oxidized Ti-6Al-4V alloy

Byeong-Seok Lim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the precipitation of bone-like apatite on plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO)-treated Ti6Al-4V alloys with different electrolyte compositions. Various characterization techniques were used to observe the surface morphology, composition, and microstructure of the samples. It was found that the PEO-treated alloy surface in the electrolyte containing Ca, P, Mn, Sr, Zn, Mg, and Si ions was covered with precipitates in a ring pattern around the pores. The Mn ions were detected in the pores and played a role in the formation of MnO2 and Mn2O3. Apatite nucleation occurred in the pores after treatment in a simulated body fluid (SBF) solution, resulting in the formation of larger precipitates.

TiO2 bioactive implant surfaces doped with specific amount of Sr modulate mineralization

A. Costa et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of varying amounts of Sr in a TiO2 porous layer, with higher Sr content increasing Ca/P ratio and promoting the formation of SrTiO3 compound. Lower Sr concentrations did not affect initial cell adhesion or viability, but rather enhanced mineralization. A Ca-P-TiO2 porous layer with less Sr concentration seems to be an ideal candidate for bone implants.
