Inelastic Performance of High-Rise Buildings to Simultaneous Actions of Alongwind and Crosswind Loads

Jinghui Huang et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive characterization of the inelastic response of tall buildings under simultaneous actions of both alongwind and crosswind loads. The results reveal the importance of considering both alongwind and crosswind loads for inelastic response analysis.

A framework for the efficient reliability assessment of inelastic wind excited structures at dynamic shakedown

Wei-Chu Chuang et al.

Summary: The introduction of performance-based wind engineering has opened up possibilities in designing wind excited structural systems with controlled inelasticity. This paper presents a stochastic simulation-based reliability assessment framework for assessing the reliability of structural systems at dynamic shakedown. The study shows that there is a significant increase in reliability at dynamic shakedown compared to component and system first yield.

Reliability-Based Collapse Assessment of Wind-Excited Steel Structures within Performance-Based Wind Engineering

Srinivasan Arunachalam et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a probabilistic collapse assessment framework for steel structures, which integrates high-fidelity nonlinear structural modeling and wind-tunnel-informed stochastic wind load model to perform nonlinear time history analysis. The framework efficiently estimates reliabilities associated with rare events and provides critical discussions on collapse mechanisms, nonlinear behavior, and fragility functions of residual and peak story drifts.

Performance-Based Assessment and Structural Response of 20-Story SAC Building under Wind Hazards through Collapse

Azin Ghaffary et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the performance of a 20-story steel moment-resisting frame under different wind speeds, showing that the building meets performance targets and was intentionally underdesigned. The study suggests that current code methods may lead to overly conservative designs and recommends incorporating performance-based approaches and controlled nonlinear responses for safer and more economical designs.

A Performance-Based Wind Engineering Framework for Engineered Building Systems Subject to Hurricanes

Zhicheng Ouyang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a PBWE framework that integrates structural and envelope damages, captures the coupling between demands and damages, and simulates the evolution of storm paths and time-dependent wind/rain fields. The framework uses non-stationary wind pressure models and computational fluid dynamics to efficiently characterize envelope performance.
