Response of a submerged floating tunnel subject to flow-induced vibration

P. X. Zou et al.

Summary: A one-way fluid-structure interaction (FSI) model with multi-scale hydrodynamic solvers and finite element method (FEM) was established to assess the dynamic performance of a submerged floating tunnel (SFT) under flow-induced vibration (FIV) conditions in practical engineering applications. The study focused on analyzing the FIV of SFTs with different cross-section shapes and found that wave conditions dominated the FIV of the SFT tube. It was also observed that extreme events resulted in standing and traveling wave patterns as well as multi-mode response. The adoption of a parametric cross-section effectively reduced the hydrodynamic forcing and structural dynamic response of the SFT.

Zhanxiong Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, a technique for estimating structural displacement by combining asynchronous acceleration and computer vision measurements using a Kalman filter was developed. The technique was validated through tests on shaking tables, four-story building models, and steel box girder pedestrian bridges, showing accurate displacement estimation with root mean square errors of less than 3 mm.

A numerical approach for coupled analysis of the seismic response of a cable-moored submerged floating tunnel

Mohammad Reza Shekari et al.

Summary: A submerged floating tunnel (SFT) is proposed as an alternative to conventional bridges and tunnels for crossing deep waterways. Limited research has been done to analyze the importance of seaquake effects on SFTs. This paper numerically simulates the dynamic response of an SFT system under bidirectional earthquake actions and confirms the significance of input seismic excitation characteristics.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility of submerged floating tunnels (SFTs) with vertical and inclined combined tethers, and uses hydrodynamic analysis to evaluate the system. The numerical analysis shows that the combined mooring system meets design conditions when the tether spacing is less than 40.0 m and inclination angle is 45.0 degrees.

Structural displacement estimation by fusing vision camera and accelerometer using hybrid computer vision algorithm and adaptive multi-rate Kalman filter

Zhanxiong Ma et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a technique for estimating structural displacement by fusing asynchronous acceleration and vision measurements. By integrating a hybrid computer vision algorithm and an adaptive multirate Kalman filter, high-sampling displacements can be efficiently estimated from low-sampling vision measurements and high-sampling acceleration measurements. Experimental validation shows that the proposed technique accurately estimates high-sampling displacements in real-time with less than 1.5 mm error, indicating its potential for practical applications in long-term continuous structural displacement monitoring.

Time-domain coupled dynamic simulation for SFT-mooring-train interaction in waves and earthquakes

Chungkuk Jin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic and hydro-elastic interactions of Submerged Floating Tunnel (SFT)-mooring-train coupled dynamics under wave and earthquake excitations. The SFT and train dynamics are modeled and simulated, with a focus on earthquake-induced responses and the effects of various parameters on the system. Results show that earthquake-induced motions are more significant compared to train-induced motions, with factors such as soil conditions, seismic-wave propagation, and structural damping playing important roles in the dynamic responses. Additionally, the study evaluates the derailment and offload factors and riding-comfort criterion for different train speeds in relation to the tunnel and train designs.

Three-dimensional equivalent static analysis for design of submerged floating tunnel

Gyu-Jin Kim et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a supplementary approach to obtain structural responses of a submerged floating tunnel in the circumferential direction, in addition to traditional longitudinal global time-history analyses. Three-dimensional finite-element analyses were performed by applying static loads equivalent to dynamic loads, with validation supported by comparison of tension forces in mooring lines obtained using different software tools.

On rotational flows with discontinuous vorticity beneath steady water waves near stagnation

Lin Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors investigate the flow structure of periodic steady water waves with fixed relative mass flux propagating on rotational flows with piece-wise constant vorticity. Their findings reveal new insights into the characteristics of stagnation points in wave solutions along the global bifurcation diagram, as well as provide in-depth discussions on pressure distributions and particle trajectories beneath large-amplitude steady waves near stagnation. Additionally, the study expands on previous results regarding the amplitude and mass flux of steady water waves travelling on rotational flows with discontinuous vorticity.

Optimization of tuned mass damper for seismic control of submerged floating tunnel

Chungkuk Jin et al.

Summary: This study optimizes the spring and damping coefficients of a tuned mass damper (TMD) using metaheuristic optimization algorithms to reduce the lateral motions and mooring tensions of a submerged floating tunnel (SFT) under seismic excitations. The optimized TMD effectively attenuates the resonant hydro-elastic transient motions of the SFT at its lowest lateral natural frequency and significantly reduces mooring tensions, especially in large earthquakes.
