Inflammation and the Link to Vascular Brain Health: Timing Is Brain

Katherine T. Mun et al.

Summary: Inflammation plays a significant role in vascular brain health, acting as both a trigger for brain injury and increasing the risk for chronic cerebrovascular disease. Different inflammatory pathways play distinct roles in various states of cerebrovascular injury. Recent evidence highlights the role of specific inflammatory pathways in stroke risk, chronic cerebrovascular injury, and the different phases of stroke. The association between cerebrovascular infections and increased stroke risk is also reviewed. Understanding the phasic nature of inflammatory cascades in cerebrovascular disease is crucial for developing anti-inflammatory strategies for prevention, treatment, and repair of vascular brain injury.

Role of Immune and Inflammatory Mechanisms in Stroke: A Review of Current Advances

Hui Zhao et al.

Summary: Stroke is a major cause of disease and death in China, with hypertension and smoking being prevalent risk factors. Understanding the mechanisms and developing effective treatments for stroke patients is crucial. The pathophysiology of stroke involves a complex interplay of immune and inflammatory mechanisms. Inflammation triggered by neuronal cell death and the release of damaging factors exacerbates neuronal injury, while impairments in the blood-brain barrier, oxidative stress, microvascular dysfunction, and brain edema cause secondary brain damage. Immune cells, including microglia and infiltrating inflammatory cells, play a crucial role in initiating brain inflammation. Anti-inflammatory therapies targeting these mechanisms can alleviate primary and secondary brain damage following stroke.

Interleukin-6 as Predictor of One-Year Cognitive Function After Ischemic Stroke or TIA

Yu Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between the inflammatory marker interleukin-6 (IL-6) and cognitive decline after acute ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA). The results showed that elevated IL-6 levels were independently associated with a reduction in cognitive assessment after ischemic stroke and TIA.

The Impact of Vascular Risk Factors on Post-stroke Cognitive Impairment: The Nor-COAST Study

Stina Aam et al.

Summary: Post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) is influenced by vascular risk factors, with atrial fibrillation, coronary heart disease, and previous stroke leading to more severe cognitive deficits. However, some cognitive domains show improvement from 3 to 18 months in patients without specific risk factors. Further research on interventions targeting vascular risk factors is needed to prevent PSCI.
