Deformation and damage evolution of a full-scale adhesive joint between a steel bracket and a sandwich panel for naval application

Pankaj R. Jaiswal et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mechanical behavior and failure mechanisms of adhesive joints in naval superstructures through experimental research. Various instrumentation techniques were used to monitor the deformation behavior and damage evolution of a full-scale multi-material joint. The results showed adhesive, cohesive, and skin failure modes, with acceptable correlation found between different sensor signals.

Mode II fracture of an MMA adhesive layer: Theory versus experiment

Sina Askarinejad et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a mechanics model for adhesive fracture of lap joints under shear loading. Crack initiation and growth in the joints are measured and monitored by Digital Image Correlation. The study assesses the ability of a cohesive zone model to predict various features of specimen failure in cases of high shear ductility adhesive layers.

Effect of surface preparation technique on bond behavior of CFRP-steel double-lap joints: Experimental and numerical studies

Oswaldo Russian et al.

Summary: The experimental program evaluated CFRP-steel double-lap shear (DLS) joints in terms of strength, failure mode, load-displacement behavior, and interfacial shear stress distribution. Grit-blasted specimens with strand sheet CFRP exhibited the highest strength, maximum displacements, and interfacial shear stresses, with mixed interfacial/cohesive failure. Other configurations failed at the adhesive-steel interface.

The effect of joint configuration on the strength and stress distributions of dissimilar adhesively bonded joints

Armin Yousefi Kanani et al.

Summary: A comparative study on different adhesive joint configurations revealed that the scarf joint performed the best. Increasing overlap length was beneficial for certain configurations while the mechanical properties of the adherends significantly affected failure mechanisms.

Effect of adhesive layer properties on the shear strength of single-lap structures of dissimilar materials based on the cohesive zone model

Jiwei Huang et al.

Summary: This paper presents an analysis method for improving the shear strength of single-lap joints of dissimilar materials based on the cohesive zone model (CZM). By establishing a shear-lag model for the single-lap joint and deriving the stress distribution of joints, the study verifies the model through simulation. It constructs a bilinear CZM to simulate the fracture process of joints and comprehensively analyzes the influence of lap length and adhesive layer thickness on the stress distribution of adhesive layers. Through experiments, the research discusses the effects of different properties of adhesive layers on the bonded structure strength.

The effects of adherend thickness on the fatigue strength of adhesively bonded single-lap joints

Resul Sahin et al.

Summary: Adhesive bonding methods have been widely used in aerospace applications since the 1980s. This study experimentally investigated the lifetimes of single-lap joints of different adherend thicknesses under varying tensile fatigue loads. The static tensile strength of the joints was found to increase with increasing adherend thickness, affecting the maximum load applied to the joints over infinite cycles.

Thermally induced strain in joints with dissimilar adherends bonded with a flexible adhesive

V Bagiatis et al.

Summary: This study investigated the behavior of assemblies with PMMA bonded to glass under a temperature gradient, using 3D digital image correlation. The analysis of surface strain fields and investigations of joints with different bond line thickness were performed. The results were evaluated and compared with finite-element analysis, showing excellent agreement and indicating the successful application of DIC method in understanding thermally induced strains in adhesively bonded assemblies.

Effects of surface treatment and adhesive thickness on the shear strength of precision bonded joints

Lei Guo et al.

Summary: The study found that different surface treatments have an impact on the bond strength of single-lap-joint specimens, with PAA treatment significantly improving the bond strength. Additionally, bond strength is not only determined by surface roughness value or wettability, but also by surface characteristics such as peak density, nano-scale pores, and texture direction.

Influence of surface roughness and bondline thickness on the bonding performance of epoxy adhesive joints on mild steel substrates

Dawei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of surface roughness and bondline thickness on the bonding performance of epoxy adhesive joints, finding that rougher substrates or thinner adhesive bondlines resulted in higher bonding strengths and maximum shear strains. SEM analysis showed that improved bonding on very rough substrates was due to strong mechanical interlocking, while thinner adhesive bondlines offered larger capabilities of plastic deformation.
