A novel selection method of CMIP6 GCMs for robust climate projection

Mohammed Magdy Hamed et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel method to select CMIP6 GCMs for climate projection, assessing their ability in reconstructing climate variables. Four suitable GCMs for climate projections in Egypt were identified, with consistent biases in simulating precipitation and temperature.

Inter-comparison of historical simulation and future projections of rainfall and temperature by CMIP5 and CMIP6 GCMs over Egypt

Mohammed Magdy Hamed et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of global climate models (GCMs) of CMIP6 compared to CMIP5 in predicting climate changes over Egypt, showing improvement in replicating historical rainfall and temperature climatology for CMIP6 models. The uncertainties in simulating seasonal variability were lower for CMIP6, indicating more aggravated scenarios of climate changes in Egypt than previously anticipated.

Projection of Hot and Cold Extremes in the Amu River Basin of Central Asia using GCMs CMIP6

Obaidullah Salehie et al.

Summary: Due to global warming, extreme temperatures have become more frequent and intense, especially in dry regions, with devastating consequences for the Amu river basin in Central Asia. This study projected warm and cold extremes for different socioeconomic scenarios in the basin using climate models. The results showed that the west of the basin would experience more hot extremes, while the east would see more cold extremes. The annual mean of maximum and minimum temperatures would significantly increase, with the increase in minimum temperatures being higher than maximum temperatures. This would lead to an increase in hot extremes and a decrease in cold extremes, with the west experiencing a higher increase in hot extremes and the east experiencing a higher decrease in cold extremes.

Thermal bioclimatic indicators over Southeast Asia: present status and future projection using CMIP6

Mohammed Magdy Hamed et al.

Summary: Assessing potential changes in bioclimatic characteristics is crucial for addressing climate change and planning mitigation goals in Southeast Asia (SEA). This study used 23 global climate models to evaluate changes in 11 thermal bioclimatic indicators in SEA under different socioeconomic pathways. The results showed spatial heterogeneity and temporal variability in projected changes, with mainland SEA expected to experience larger changes in the future compared to the maritime region. Uncertainty was also found to be higher for mainland SEA. Overall, the findings suggest a shift in climate in SEA, with a decrease in temperature range and isothermality and a narrowing of seasonality.

Comparison between CMIP5 and CMIP6 Models over MENA Region Using Historical Simulations and Future Projections

Mohammed Magdy Hamed et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the performance of global climate models in simulating various climate variables and compares the biases and uncertainties between two versions of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project. It finds that CMIP6 models have less bias and lower uncertainty compared to CMIP5 models, particularly in simulating rainfall, temperatures, and wind speed.

Identifying the need for locally-observed wet bulb globe temperature across outdoor athletic venues for current and future climates in a desert environment

Summary: The study found that on-site WBGT measurements were significantly higher than those estimated from regional weather stations by 2.4-2.5 degrees Celsius under hot-humid and hot-dry weather conditions. August had significantly higher mean WBGTs compared to June across all venues, with 'limit activity' or 'cancellation' thresholds reached for several hours each day. Climate projections indicate increased WBGTs and the potential for all-day activity cancellations under certain scenarios.

Historical trends in crop water demand over semiarid region of Syria

Rajab Homsi et al.

Summary: This research examined the effects of climate change on crop water demand in Syria, finding an increase in water demand for crops like barley and wheat from 1981 to 2010, with a decrease in the south and an increase in the north. The study highlights the importance of developing agricultural planning based on expected future climate changes to maintain agricultural production in the region.
