Exploring Australian teachers' perceptions of physical literacy: a mixed-methods study

Inimfon A. Essiet et al.

Summary: The study found that while most teachers were aware of the importance of physical literacy, only partially understood the concept, often interpreting it as an understanding of bodily movements and/or the benefits of physical activity participation. Teachers highlighted the need for curriculum alignment, provision of resources and professional development opportunities, and policy changes in implementing physical literacy in schools, recognizing potential barriers such as time constraints, workload, and lack of prioritization of physical education within schools.

Cara Shearer et al.

Summary: This systematic review identified tools for assessing physical literacy in children aged 7-11.9 years and highlighted the importance of methodological quality and reporting in measurement properties for assessments in physical education. Various assessment tools were found to be feasible for primary PE settings, but some tools require expertise for administration and scoring. Researchers and tool developers are encouraged to improve the methodological quality and reporting of measurement properties in assessments.

Physical Literacy Assessment Tools: A Systematic Literature Review for Why, What, Who, and How

Habyarimana Jean de Dieu et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the current landscape of physical literacy assessment tools, finding that the majority focus on fundamental movement skills, athlete development, or health and well-being, rather than lifelong participation in physical activity. It also discovered that only a small percentage of tools address all three domains of physical literacy, with the International Physical Literacy Association's matrix being the only one that considers individuals of all age groups. Additionally, most tools were found to prioritize assessment for learning or a combination of assessment for learning and assessment as learning while evaluating individuals' progress in physical literacy.

Physical literacy: a sixth proposition in the Australian/Victorian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education?

Trent D. Brown et al.

Summary: Internationally, there is a renewed interest in physical literacy within the context of physical education, with Sport Australia releasing the Australian Physical Literacy Framework to promote a common understanding of the concept. This paper critically examines the potential impact of physical literacy on curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment, proposing its introduction as a sixth proposition alongside other key principles.
