Seizing the opportunity to redesign physical education teacher education: blending paradigms to create transformative experiences in teacher education

Antonio Calderon et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted a reevaluation of teaching and learning methods, particularly in physical education teacher education (PETE) practices. This paper argues that redefining PETE practices requires revisiting and challenging existing paradigms at a programmatic level. By considering different philosophical orientations as complementary rather than competing ideologies, this paper offers specific directions and reflective prompts for blending paradigms in teacher preparation programs. The authors propose a double-pyramid approach to demonstrate how multiple paradigms can coexist, providing a holistic and comprehensive plan for PETE. The programmatic structure and decisions around paradigms and their blending are crucial in shaping pre-service teachers' educational experiences and should serve as a starting point for redefining PETE practices.

Learning communities and physical education professional development: A scoping review

Melissa Parker et al.

Summary: Learning communities in physical education are considered effective for professional development, with a focus on teachers in the majority of studies. Research reflects an international database with South Korea, the US, and England dominating the literature. Limited evidence exists on the sustained nature of learning communities over time and their impact on student learning. Future research should focus on the nature and theoretical alignment of communities.

Pre-service teachers' negotiation of meaning in their Physical Education Teacher Education programme: a two-year follow-up ethnography

Carla Valerio et al.

Summary: This study examines how pre-service teachers negotiate meaning during their Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) programs, using communities of practice (CoP) as a theoretical framework. The findings highlight the challenges faced by pre-service teachers in their first year of the program, such as the lack of diversity and connections within course units, and the absence of democratic spaces in class discussions. The study suggests that PETE programs should emphasize pedagogical strategies that foster the cultivation of CoPs, and improve collaboration between universities and host schools.

Bridging the gap between theory and practice: the impact of school-university partnership in a PETE program

Osvaldo Luiz Ferraz et al.

Summary: This study found that PSTs generated new knowledge through practical experiences in early childhood physical education, rather than solely relying on academic knowledge, allowing them to reorganize their knowledge and develop new teaching approaches. The partnership between university and school was identified as an effective way to bridge the gap between theory and practice, facilitating the identification and application of teachers' knowledge base.

Facilitation as an Act of Love: A Self-Study of How a Facilitator's Pedagogy Changed Over Time in the Process of Supporting a Community of Learners

Carla Luguetti et al.

Summary: Purpose: This study examines how a facilitator's pedagogy evolves in supporting a community of learners using an activist sport approach. The study used a self-study framework over four semesters, with data collected from field notes and debriefing meetings. Findings identified the facilitator's struggles in creating a democratic learning space, discomfort in relinquishing control, and negotiation of emotions in building group identity. The discussion highlights the potential of facilitation as an act of love in decolonizing and reinventing reality through critiquing forms of oppression.

Challenges faced by preservice and novice teachers in implementing student-centred models: A systematic review

Rita Silva et al.

Summary: This study aimed to uncover challenges faced by preservice and novice teachers in implementing student-centred models. The findings indicated that teacher-related, student-related, and external challenges all impact the implementation process. Education programs should focus on training teachers to manage cooperative interactions, design appropriate activities, and gradually transfer responsibility to students for their learning. Longer studies and student perspectives will be beneficial for future research.
