Meta-analysis of maize responses to Azospirillum brasilense inoculation in Brazil: Benefits and lessons to improve inoculation efficiency

Julierme Zimmer Barbosa et al.

Summary: The inoculation of maize with Azospirillum brasilense has shown significant increases in root mass, N leaf concentration, grain yield, and N in grains. The benefits of inoculation were higher at lower yields and lower N rates, with seed inoculation being more efficient than leaf-spray inoculation.

Co-inoculation with tropical strains of Azospirillum and Bacillus is more efficient than single inoculation for improving plant growth and nutrient uptake in maize

Vitoria Palhares Ribeiro et al.

Summary: The usage of Bacillus and Azospirillum as new microbial consortium inoculants could improve plant growth and crop yield. This study showed that co-inoculation with two Azospirillum strains enhanced maize growth in hydroponics and non-sterile soil, resulting in increased root length, surface area, and root diameter. In the greenhouse experiment, maize inoculated with the two Azospirillum strains exhibited higher shoot dry weight, shoot P and K content, root dry weight, root N and K content, and acid and alkaline phosphatase activities. These findings suggest that co-inoculation with selected Azospirillum strains can have synergistic interactions and improve tropical cropping systems sustainability.

Effects of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria on the molecular responses of maize under drought and heat stresses: A review

Iviwe Notununu et al.

Summary: Drought and heat are common environmental stresses that negatively affect maize growth and productivity. The use of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) is a promising strategy to enhance drought and heat stress tolerance in maize by influencing molecular, metabolic, and physiological stress responses. This review provides an assessment of current knowledge on the ability of PGPR to induce drought and heat stress tolerance in maize plants.

Rhizosphere microbiomes can regulate plant drought tolerance

Mehtab Muhammad Aslam et al.

Summary: This article reviews the response and role of beneficial microbes in drought stress and their potential in improving crop growth. The authors propose that future research should focus on evaluating the dynamics of root-associated beneficial microbes under field drought conditions, and integrated approaches of ecology, microbiology, and molecular biology could be a promising strategy for producing drought-resilient and sustainable crops.

Comparison of N uptake of maize inoculated with two diazotrophic bacterial species grown under two N levels

Albiane Carvalho Dias et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of inoculating plants with two diazotrophic bacteria on root architecture and N uptake rate under different NO3- availabilities. Results showed that inoculation with Ab-Sp245 significantly improved root surface area, plant dry matter, N accumulation, and NUE under high N availability conditions, suggesting a positive impact on root architecture and N uptake efficiency.

Outstanding impact of Azospirillum brasilense strains Ab-V5 and Ab-V6 on the Brazilian agriculture: Lessons that farmers are receptive to adopt new microbial inoculants

Mariana Sanches Santos et al.

Summary: Microbial inoculants or biofertilizers are biotechnological products aimed at replacing chemical fertilizers, reducing production costs, and environmental pollution. Brazil has a long tradition in the use of rhizobial inoculants and has shown impressive results in the application of two plant-growth-promoting strains in various crops in recent years.
