This study aimed to investigate the wound healing mechanisms of Ipomoea carnea, a plant-based drug. The methanolic extract of I. carnea exhibited antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and angiogenic activities. It contained active compounds and showed potential for promoting wound healing.
There are certain commercial synthetic drugs like povidone iodine and thymosin beta-4 available for the pro-motion of wound healing but resulting in varied side effects, which have encouraged people to look into plant-based drugs. Ipomoea carnea has been used by certain tribal groups in India for wound healing but it's mechanism of action has not been explored yet. Therefore the present project aimed to study the wound healing mechanisms of I. carnea such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and angiogenic activi-ties using in vitro models. The methanolic extract of I. carnea had a higher yield (2.33%), TPC (761.85 mg/L) and GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of phytochemicals like 7-methoxy coumarin, anethole, 8-prenyl-naringenin and majdine. Methanolic extract of I. carnea exhibited antioxidant activity (DPPH scavenging: 41.95%, superoxide scavenging: 95.28%, hydrogen peroxide scavenging: 24.72% and hydroxyl radical scav-enging: 80.60%). Anti-inflammatory activity of I. carnea in terms of inhibition of protein denaturation (39.81%), protease inhibition (15.40%) and inhibition of RBC membrane denaturation (75.76%) was noted. Methanolic extract of I. carnea showed anti-bacterial activity (ZOI: 8.65 mm, MIC: 6.25 mg/mL and MBC: 18.95 mg/mL) on MRSA and also controlled its growth rate within 30 min of treatment. Angiogenic parame-ters such as total number of blood vessels (10.60 Nos.), blood vessel area (28.20%) and number of total nets (22.50 Nos.) were improved in I. carnea treated CAM model. Increased levels of TNF-alpha and IL-6 were observed in I. carnea extract treated PBMC which correlate with its wound healing potential via stimulation of angiogenesis.(c) 2023 SAAB.
