Seismic bearing capacity of a strip footing on rock media

Obaidur Rahaman et al.

Summary: The bearing capacity factors for a rough strip footing on rock media subjected to horizontal earthquake body forces have been determined using the lower bound finite element limit analysis and power cone programming. The study thoroughly assessed the effects of variations in horizontal earthquake acceleration coefficient, unit weight of rock mass, ground surcharge pressure, and GHB material shear strength parameters on the bearing capacity factors. Non-dimensional charts have been developed for design purposes, and the accuracy of the analysis has been verified through comparison with existing solutions.

Effect of Love Wave Propagation on the Equivalent Seismic Bearing Capacity of Shallow Foundations Using 3D Coulomb Failure Mechanism

Ardavan Izadi et al.

Summary: The seismic acceleration coefficient and Love wave frequency are key parameters affecting the performance of shallow foundations. With increasing earthquake accelerations and Love wave wavelengths, the bearing capacity of shallow footings decreases. Increasing soil cohesion and footing embedment depth can reduce the detrimental impacts of surface waves on shallow footings.

Modified pseudo-dynamic bearing capacity of strip footing on rock masses

Jing Liu et al.

Summary: The seismic bearing capacity of a strip footing on rock masses is investigated using the upper bound theorem of limit analysis in this paper. The equivalent Mohr-Coulomb parameters of the modified Hoek-Brown criterion are obtained using the generalized tangential technique. The seismic effects are evaluated using the modified pseudo-dynamic (MPD) method, taking into account the damping characteristics of the site and the dynamic characteristics of the seismic waves. A parametric study is conducted, and the results show that the seismic acceleration coefficient, geological strength index, material constant of the intact rock, and normalized frequency all have a significant impact on the seismic bearing capacity.

Estimation of the Seismic Bearing Capacity of Shallow Strip Footings Based on a Pseudodynamic Approach

Junhao Zhong et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the bearing capacity of a shallow strip footing under earthquake conditions using a pseudodynamic method. A nonsymmetrical multiblock mechanism is adopted to describe the uplift failure of the foundations, and a slice method is proposed to adapt the variation in inertial force. The rigorous upper-bound solution of the seismic bearing capacity factors is derived and optimized using sequential quadratic programming. The influence of dynamic parameters on the bearing capacity of the strip footing is revealed through a parametric analysis.

Evaluation of the pseudo-dynamic bearing capacity of surface footings on cohesionless soils using finite element lower bound limit analysis

Amirhossein Safardoost Siahmazgi et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the seismic bearing capacity of a strip footing founded on a soil deposit using lower bound limit analysis method merged with the finite element formulation. Results show the significant influence of various factors on seismic bearing capacity and that the MPD, CPD and SPD methods exhibit good agreement with each other. The MPD approach yields the most conservative seismic bearing capacity values.

Conventional vs. modified pseudo-dynamic seismic analyses in the shallow strip footing bearing capacity problem

Ghazal Rezaie Soufi et al.

Summary: The seismic bearing capacity of strip foundations is studied using the CPD, MPD, and SPD methods, showing consistent results between MPD and SPD. Both methods experience a general reduction in bearing capacity with increasing lambda/B, with fluctuations corresponding to soil natural frequencies.

Summary: The study analyzes the stability of slopes under seismic conditions using a pseudodynamic approach, proposing an alternative strategy of slicing unstable blocks to consider spatial variations of seismic waves, and deriving the minimum factor of safety using a strength reduction technique. The research demonstrates the effectiveness and rationality of the proposed method in slope safety assessment.

Effect of Roughness on Seismic Bearing Capacity of Shallow Foundations near Slopes Using the Lower Bound Finite Element Method

Ardavan Izadi et al.

Summary: This study used lower bound finite element analysis combined with linear programming to investigate the impact of soil-foundation interface roughness on the seismic limit load of shallow foundations near slopes. The findings suggest that soil-foundation interface roughness has a more pronounced effect on foundations when adjacent slopes are present and subjected to seismic loading.

Spectral bearing capacity analysis of strip footings under pseudo-dynamic excitation

Ardavan Izadi et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the spectral seismic bearing capacity of strip foundations using the limit equilibrium method and pseudo-dynamic approach. The results consider the contributions of cohesion, surcharge, and soil weight, and show the influence of various factors on the seismic bearing capacity factor. The methodology presented in this study demonstrates efficiency in accounting for seismic loading characteristics and shear strength parameters in determining the bearing capacity of shallow footings.

Seismic bearing capacity of shallow foundations rested on anisotropic deposits

Pouneh Pakdel et al.

Summary: This paper investigated the effect of the anisotropy of the internal friction angle on the seismic bearing capacity factor of shallow foundations and found that the factor decreases with an increase in anisotropy and seismic accelerations. The pseudo-dynamic seismic loading approach returned higher bearing capacity predictions compared to the pseudo-static approach, and the footing loses its capacity after a certain base excitation.
