Reproducing ground response using in-situ soil dynamic parameters

Yu Miao et al.

Summary: In this study, the in-situ soil dynamic parameters were extracted and used to simulate the propagation of seismic waves in near-surface. The results show the need to consider downward waves in estimating shear strain, and validate the effectiveness and reliability of using in-situ soil dynamic parameters in reproducing and predicting nonlinear ground response. The study also highlights the sensitivity of ground response analysis to velocity profiles and damping models.

Near-surface softening and healing in eastern Honshu associated with the 2011 magnitude-9 Tohoku-Oki Earthquake

Su-Yang Wang et al.

Summary: The near-surface part of the Earth's crust, where human activities take place, is of great importance to engineers in infrastructure construction. Reduction in the stiffness of near-surface geomaterials plays a crucial role in triggering geohazards, but the physical mechanism behind material softening is not fully understood. The study reports a coseismic shear-wave velocity reduction in the near surface during a major earthquake event, followed by a two-stage healing process that includes rapid recovery within minutes and slow recovery over many years. A theoretical contact model between mineral grains in geomaterials is proposed to explain the different stages in the healing process.

Statistical numerical method for determining seismic performance and fragility of shallow-buried underground structure

Haiyang Zhuang et al.

Summary: This study conducted numerical simulations on the soil-underground structure system, establishing a statistical numerical modeling method for classifying the seismic damage status and performance level. Input ground motion characteristics significantly affected the IDA curves, with the rationality and randomness of selected ground motions being crucial for ensuring the seismic fragility curves of underground structures. The effectiveness of the developed statistical numerical modeling method was verified through comparison with existing research results and seismic damage assessment.

A multi-scale attention neural network for sensor location selection and nonlinear structural seismic response prediction

Teng Li et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a four-stage practical solution for predicting seismic displacement responses of civil structures using acceleration measurements at optimized sensor locations. A novel multi-scale attention-based recurrent neural network is trained to focus on relevant input data and a floor displacement loss function is designed to measure the prediction accuracy. Performance evaluation on numerical and real-world data shows that the proposed methodology outperforms state-of-the-art methods in prediction accuracy and reliability.
