Tracing carbon and nitrogen microbial assimilation in suspended particles in freshwaters

Leonardo Mena-Rivera et al.

Summary: The dynamic interactions between dissolved organic matter (DOM) and particulate organic matter (POM) play a crucial role in nutrient cycling in freshwater ecosystems. However, the molecular-level mechanisms of such interactions are still unclear. In this study, we examined the chemical and microbial composition of suspended sediments in the River Chew, UK, and used a stable isotope probing (SIP) approach to investigate the assimilation of specific substrates by particle-associated microbial communities.

Combining field and laboratory approaches to quantify N assimilation in a soil microbe-plant-animal grazing land system

Summary: Efficient management of fertiliser nitrogen (N) is crucial for global food production and ecosystem health. This study used a systems approach to investigate the partitioning of 15N in a low-intensity sheep grazed grassland. The results showed that soil microbes play a central role in capturing excess fertiliser and urinary-N, reducing nitrogen losses and supporting plant N supply. This highlights the importance of targeting sheep NUE and the role of soil microbial community in optimising ecosystem service provisioning.

Compound-specific amino acid 15N-stable isotope probing for the quantification of biological nitrogen fixation in soils

Mashita Chiewattanakul et al.

Summary: Biological nitrogen fixation is vital to ecosystem functions, but direct quantification of nitrogen fixation rates has remained challenging. This study developed a novel method using analysis of soil amino acids to quantify biological nitrogen fixation in soils, providing previously unobtainable quantitative information.

Calculation of fungal and bacterial inorganic nitrogen immobilization rates in soil

Xiaobo Li et al.

Summary: Microbial inorganic nitrogen immobilization is crucial for nitrogen retention in soils, but measuring the respective immobilization rates of inorganic N by fungi and bacteria remains challenging due to the complexity of soil microorganisms. A proposed mathematical framework integrating measurable gross inorganic N immobilization rate and proxies for fungal and bacterial immobilization rates offers a promising approach to quantify the contributions of fungal and bacterial communities to soil nitrogen retention mechanisms.
