Long-term N addition accelerated organic carbon mineralization in aggregates by shifting microbial community composition

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: Long-term nitrogen addition affects Cmin and microbial community composition in soil aggregates, accelerating SOC turnover. Spatial heterogeneity in different aggregate sizes selects for microbial life strategies and influences the distribution of microbial communities.

Response of rhizosphere microbial community of Chinese chives under different fertilization treatments

Tianhang Niu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of slow-release fertilizer on rhizosphere soil properties and microbial communities in Chinese chives. The results showed that slow-release fertilizer significantly improved soil nutrients, enzyme activity, and microbial community structure and diversity. The recommended fertilization rate for Chinese chive cultivation is NPK: 62.8 kg per 667 m².

Assessment of eutrophication potential from fertiliser application in agricultural systems in Thailand

Balasuriyage Thulangi Gayathma Balasuriya et al.

Summary: This study assessed the eutrophication potentials associated with fertiliser application in rice, maize, cassava, sugarcane, and oil palm cultivation in Thailand. The results showed that sugarcane cultivation had the highest eutrophication impact, with nitrate being the major contributor. Using a nitrification inhibitor and nutrient management practices were effective in reducing ecosystem damage.

Diversity patterns and drivers of soil bacterial and fungal communities along elevational gradients in the Southern Himalayas, China

Nan Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the diversity patterns and drivers of soil microbes at different elevations in the Southern Himalayas of China, revealing that plant, bacterial, and fungal diversity, richness, and abundance showed distinctive patterns across elevations. Soil pH and nutrients were identified as important drivers, with soil pH influencing soil bacterial diversity, richness, and abundance, while soil nutrients playing a major role in fungal diversity, richness, and abundance.

Optimizing nitrogen management to mitigate gaseous losses and improve net benefits of an open-field Chinese cabbage system

Daijia Fan et al.

Summary: The excessive and inappropriate application of nitrogen fertilizer in open vegetable fields is a major anthropogenic source of gaseous nitrogen losses in China. This study found that optimized nitrogen management, using reduced application rates, controlled-release urea, and nitrification inhibitors, can effectively reduce nitrous oxide and ammonia emissions. The experiment on Chinese cabbage fields showed that the treatment with controlled-release urea and nitrification inhibitor had the greatest reduction in nitrous oxide emissions and the most economic benefits.

Soil microbial community composition in a paddy field with different fertilization managements

Limin Wang et al.

Summary: A 10-year field experiment showed that different fertilization treatments did not significantly affect microbial alpha diversity, but changed soil properties and thus impacted microbial community structure. Bacterial phyla Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Acidobacteria, as well as fungal phyla Ascomycota and Basidiomycota dominated all fertilization treatments. Soil total potassium (TK) concentration was a major factor driving bacterial community structure variation, while soil TN and NO3--N were important factors shaping fungal community structure.

Effects of nitrogen fertilization for bud initiation and tiller growth on yield and quality of rice ratoon crop in central China

Desheng Yang et al.

Summary: Ratooning rice, a traditional practice of harvesting twice after a single seeding, has gained popularity among farmers in central China. Research shows that nitrogen application for promoting regenerated tiller growth (Ntiller) has a more significant positive effect on grain yield and quality of ratoon crop (RC) compared to nitrogen application for promoting bud initiation (Nbud). Ntiller not only increases grain yield, head rice percentage, and improves grain quality, but also enhances sink size and source ability in the ratoon crop.

Responses of soil bacterial and fungal communities to the long-term monoculture of grapevine

Qianwen Liu et al.

Summary: Soil microorganisms are crucial for the long-term sustainability of agricultural ecosystems, yet continuous grapevine replanting can disrupt the stability of soil microbial communities. Short-term grapevine replanting increased the relative abundance of potential beneficial bacteria and harmful fungi in rhizosphere soils, with available nitrogen and available potassium being the primary soil factors related to the shift of bacterial and fungal communities.
