Self-Sensing Cementitious Composites with Hierarchical Carbon Fiber-Carbon Nanotube Composite Fillers for Crack Development Monitoring of a Maglev Girder

Siqi Ding et al.

Summary: This paper presents the development of a new-generation self-sensing cementitious composite (SSCC) incorporated with a hierarchically structured carbon fiber (CF)-carbon nanotube (CNT) composite filler (CF-CNT). The CF-CNT is synthesized by directly growing CNT on CF, and factors such as catalyst, temperature, and gas composition are considered in the synthesis process. The CF-CNT provides improved interfacial bonding and alleviates CNT aggregation, resulting in SSCCs with high mechanical properties, electrical conductivity, and self-sensing performances. These SSCCs are integrated into a smart system for crack development monitoring in a full-scale maglev girder, demonstrating high sensitivity and fidelity in detecting cracks and damage events. The system shows great potential for structural health monitoring of infrastructures.

A novel temperature-dependent percolation model for the electrical conductivity and piezoresistive sensitivity of carbon nanotub e-fille d nanocomposites

Mojtaba Haghgoo et al.

Summary: Monte Carlo simulation is used in conjunction with a percolation model to analyze the effect of temperature and carbon nanotube dispersion on the conductive network of a nanocomposite. The study focuses on the transition from electrical tunneling to quantum tunneling at elevated temperatures. The results show that the strain sensitivity of the nanocomposite can be increased by achieving a uniform dispersion of short carbon nanotubes.

Comprehensive evaluation of the piezoresistive behavior of carbon nanotube-based composite strain sensors

Zhen-Hua Tang et al.

Summary: In this paper, a comprehensive analytical model is developed to predict the electro-mechanical response of conductive CNT-based composite sensors by considering critical factors such as CNT dimensions, interphase, nanotube waviness, and dispersion state. The key factors were found to play important roles in determining the sensitivity of CNT-based composite strain sensors, and the validity of the developed model was demonstrated through comparisons with existing numerical and experimental data. The developed model provides a deeper understanding of the piezoresistive behavior of CNT-based composite sensors compared to existing models, and a meaningful recommendation is made to optimize the design of highly sensitive CNT-based composite sensors.
