Microfluidic emulsification techniques for controllable emulsion production and functional microparticle synthesis

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: Emulsions play a significant role in the template synthesis of functional microparticles. Controlling the features of emulsions is crucial for the synthesis of advanced microparticles with desired functions. This review focuses on the recent advances in microfluidic emulsification techniques for controllable emulsion production and microparticle synthesis. It introduces versatile microfluidic emulsification techniques and discusses the structural changes of emulsions induced by regulating the mesoscale structures of surfactant molecules. The rational synthesis of microparticles with controllable features and functions from emulsion templates is highlighted, as well as the interplay between emulsion templates and microparticles. The future development of microfluidics in emulsion production and microparticle synthesis is also discussed.

Self-emulsification in chemical and pharmaceutical technologies

Diana Cholakova et al.

Summary: The interest in low energy self-emulsification techniques has grown rapidly in recent years due to the shift towards greener technologies, expensive and high-maintenance nanoemulsification equipment, and the demand for efficient self-emulsifying formulations for oral drug delivery. This paper provides an overview of known low-energy methods for nanoemulsion formation, discusses recent advances in their development and applications, and reviews three conceptually new approaches for self-emulsification in chemical technologies. The colloidal features and specific requirements of self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS) are also briefly discussed. The current trends and main challenges in this dynamic research area are summarized.

Solid lipid nanoparticles and nanoemulsions with solid shell: Physical and thermal stability

M. Koroleva et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of nanoemulsions and solid lipid nanoparticles in drug delivery, finding that they should have a solid shell for stability and confirming the expected core/shell morphology. Solid lipid nanoparticles composed of stearic acid and the same surfactants demonstrated a higher melting point.

Surfactants influence polymer nanoparticle fate within the brain

Andrea Joseph et al.

Summary: Drug delivery to the brain is limited by poor penetration of pharmaceutical agents across the blood-brain barrier and into specific cells. Nanotechnology, with the help of surfactants, can enhance the uptake of nanoparticles within the brain. Different surfactants have varying effects on nanoparticle transport and fate in the brain, making them an important design parameter for efficient drug delivery.

Attractive Pickering Emulsion Gels

Baiheng Wu et al.

Summary: By bridging neighboring particle-stabilized droplets via telechelic polymers, attractive Pickering emulsion gels (APEGs) are designed and prepared. These gels exhibit typical shear-thinning behaviors and their viscoelastic properties can be tuned by temperature, pH, and molecular weight of the telechelic polymers, making them ideal for direct 3D printing. The APEGs can be photopolymerized to prepare APEG-templated porous materials with tailored microstructures for optimized performances, showing promise for a wide range of applications.
