Defects and sulfur-doping design of porous carbon spheres for high-capacity potassium-ion storage

Ruling Huang et al.

Summary: Heteroatom-doping has been shown to enhance the capacitive energy storage of hard carbon in potassium ion batteries, but the introduction of external defects during the doping process can alter the microstructure of the carbon host. This study demonstrated that regulating the S-doping amount and defect level can enhance specific reactions and processes, leading to high-performance carbon anodes for KIBs. The optimal porous carbon microspheres with S-doping showed significant reversible charging capacity and structural stability during K-ion insertion.

Unusual Size Effect in Ion and Charge Transport in Micron-Sized Particulate Aluminum Anodes of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Chunlei Jiang et al.

Summary: Aluminum is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity, excellent conductivity, and natural abundance. However, the insulating oxide surface layer and poor electrolyte wettability limit its capacity utilization and hinder reaction kinetics. Surface grafting of polar amino groups is an effective strategy to improve these issues. This study reveals the critical limitations and underlying mechanisms of the aluminum anode and provides insights for other metallic anodes with similar issues.
