On-Surface Synthesis: A New Route Realizing Single-Layer Conjugated Metal-Organic Structures

Jing Liu et al.

Summary: Recent experimental and theoretical advances have shown that two-dimensional conjugated metal-organic frameworks (2DcMOFs) possess interesting electronic and magnetic properties such as high conductivity and ferromagnetism. It has been predicted that certain 2D-MOFs exhibit exotic quantum states such as topological insulating states and superconductivity. However, conventional synthesis methods often result in multilayer structures of 2D-cMOFs, suppressing the predicted exotic quantum phases due to interlayer interactions. Therefore, on-surface synthesis of single-layer cMOFs has become a desirable strategy.

Electronic structure and magnetic properties of transition metal kagome metal-organic frameworks

Seungjin Kang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the crystal structure, magnetic ground states, and anisotropy of 2D Kagome MOFs using first-principles calculations. It reveals that the covalent and ionic bonding characters of 3d orbitals are distinctive features of these MOFs. The study also demonstrates that the occupancies of active e(g)* bands determine the superexchange mechanisms and lead to either antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic ordering.

1D Coordination π-d Conjugated Polymers with Distinct Structures Defined by the Choice of the Transition Metal: Towards a New Class of Antiaromatic Macrocycles

Vijai M. Santhini et al.

Summary: Recently, there has been significant interest in pi-d conjugated coordination polymers due to their unique material properties, although synthesizing long and defect-free polymers remains challenging. A novel on-surface synthesis method using quinoidal ligands under ultra-high vacuum conditions has been introduced, enabling the formation of flexible coordination polymers with lengths up to hundreds of nanometers. This method also allows for the incorporation of different transition-metal atoms with four- or two-fold coordination, revealing the formation of wires constituted by independent 12-membered antiaromatic macrocycles linked together through two C-C single bonds in the two-fold coordination mode.

Exotic Topological Bands and Quantum States in Meta Organic and Covalent-Organic Frameworks

Wei Jiang et al.

Summary: Metal-organic and covalent-organic frameworks have unique structural properties such as high porosity and large surface-to-volume ratio, which have led to extensive research for fundamental interests and promising applications. Recent experimental breakthroughs in synthesizing 2D conjugated MOFs/COFs with high conductivity and robust magnetism have sparked renewed interest in their electronic properties. The diversity and high tunability of MOFs/COFs have provided a platform to explore novel quantum physics and chemistry, leading to the discovery of exotic quantum states.

Highly Degenerate Ground States in a Frustrated Antiferromagnetic Kagome Lattice in a Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework

Muqing Hua et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the design and synthesis of a single-layer two-dimensional metal-organic framework containing a Kagome lattice of Fe(II) ions on a gold surface, with Fe(II) ions shown to be in a high spin state and exhibiting various degenerated spin configurations. Remarkably, a spin excitation at 6 meV was observed, pointing towards a possible route to realize a spin 1/2 Kagome antiferromagnetic system by replacing Fe(II) with Cu(II) in the same structure.

Strongly correlated superconductivity in a copper-based metal-organic framework with a perfect kagome lattice

T. Takenaka et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide a tunable platform for exploring new states of matter through self-assemblies of metal ions and organic ligands. The discovery of superconductivity in the π - d conjugated 2D MOF [Cu3(C6S6)](n) (Cu-BHT) with a critical temperature Tc of 0.25 kelvin raises questions about the nature of electron pairing. The unconventional superconductivity in Cu-BHT is believed to originate from electron correlations related to spin fluctuations of the kagome lattice, with an extremely low superfluid density.
