Oriented design of triple atom catalysts for electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction with the genetic-algorithm-based global optimization method driven by first principles calculations

Wen Jing Li et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the performance trends of single-, double-, and triple-atom structures in the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) using the cohesive-energy property of metals as the descriptor. The results demonstrate that triple-atom structures exhibit superior performance in NRR, attributed to the weakened adsorption strength of the key intermediate NH2. Computational exploration of 736 triple-atom structures and extraction of 146 candidate catalysts further confirm the feasibility of the design pattern for NRR. This work provides valuable insights into the dependence of the catalytic ability of atomically dispersed metal catalysts on their structural units.
