Discrete twinning dynamics and size-dependent dislocation-to twin transition in body-centred cubic tungsten

Jiangwei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the atomistic level dynamics of twinning in BCC tungsten (W) nanowires using in situ nanomechanical testing. The results show that deformation twins in W nanowires have a minimum size of six-layers and grow in increments of approximately three-layers at a time, in contrast to the layer-by-layer growth of deformation twins in face-centred cubic metals. These findings reveal a strong competition between twinning and slip in W nanowires, with a transition size of around 40 nm. The insights provided by this work are important for understanding the plastic deformation in a broad class of BCC metals and alloys.

Understanding Grain Boundary Electrical Resistivity in Cu: The Effect of Boundary Structure

Hanna Bishara et al.

Summary: The study found a consistent relationship between the coincidence site lattice (CSL) type of grain boundaries (GBs) and their resistivity, where high dislocation density and corresponding strain fields contribute to increased resistivity. Additionally, the resistivity of GBs is approximately correlated with their excess volume.

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of the Effect of Temperature and Strain Rate on the Plastic Deformation of Body-Centered Cubic Iron Nanowires

Qian Wu et al.

Summary: The tensile tests of body-centered cubic (BCC) Fe nanowires were simulated using molecular dynamics methods. The mechanical properties and plastic deformation mechanisms of nanowires were found to be affected by temperature and strain rate. The [001]-oriented nanowires deformed mainly by twinning, while the [110]-oriented nanowires deformed dominantly by dislocation slip.

Direct observation of nanoscale dynamics of ferroelectric degradation

Qianwei Huang et al.

Summary: The failure of polarization reversal induced by cyclic electric loading in ferroelectric materials has been a long-standing challenge that negatively impacts their application in devices where reliability is critical. While space charges or injected charges are believed to dominate ferroelectric degradation, the physics behind this phenomenon remains unclear. Through in-situ biasing transmission electron microscopy, the researchers discovered a change in charge distribution in thin ferroelectrics during cyclic electric loading, with charge accumulation at domain walls being the main reason for the formation of c domains.
