Sympathetic neural responses to sleep disorders and insufficiencies

Ian M. Greenlund et al.

Summary: Short sleep duration and poor sleep quality are associated with cardiovascular risk, and sympathetic nervous system dysfunction appears to contribute to this association. Sleep disorders and insufficiencies such as sleep deprivation, insomnia, narcolepsy, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are characterized by sympathetic activation and/or dysfunction in the sympathetic/baroreflex system. Women may be at higher risk for these sleep-related cardiovascular issues.

The temporal relationships between sleep disturbance and autonomic dysregulation: A co-twin control study

Minxuan Huang et al.

Summary: Through a co-twin control study, it was found that daytime HRV is bidirectionally associated with sleep dimensions, while nighttime HRV has no association with sleep measures. Dysfunctions in autonomic regulation during wakefulness can lead to subsequent shorter sleep duration and worse sleep continuity, and their influence on each other may extend beyond 24 hours.

Associations between Sleep Quality and Heart Rate Variability; Implications for a Biological Model of Stress Detection Using Wearable Technology

Taryn Chalmers et al.

Summary: This study investigated the links between short-term sleep quality and duration, and heart rate variability in healthy individuals. The results showed that heart rate variability during stress tasks was inversely related to impaired sleep.

Sleep duration and health outcomes: an umbrella review

Jin Li et al.

Summary: There is a close relationship between sleep duration and health outcomes, with inappropriate sleep duration significantly increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, depression, and other non-cancer conditions. A reduction of 1 hour per day for short sleepers is associated with an increased risk of mortality, coronary heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes by 3-11%, while an increase of 1 hour for long sleepers is associated with a 7-17% higher risk of stroke mortality, coronary heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

Physical activity in an air-polluted environment: behavioral, psychological and neuroimaging protocol for a prospective cohort study (Healthy Aging in Industrial Environment study - Program 4)

S. Elavsky et al.

Summary: This prospective cohort study of 1500 individuals aims to investigate the impact of physical activity on health and wellbeing in highly polluted environments. Participants from a highly polluted industrial region near Ostrava are compared to controls from a less polluted region in Southern Bohemia. The study will assess short-term and long-term variations in behavioral parameters, evaluate the incidence of injuries, and explore the effects of air pollution on behavior and psychological resilience.

Heart Rate Variability and Cardiovascular Fitness: What We Know so Far

Hugo Celso Dutra Souza et al.

Summary: Fluctuation analysis in intervals between heartbeats provides important predictors of morbidity and mortality related to autonomic modulation of heart rate variability. Regular physical exercise, especially aerobic exercise, can increase cardiovascular fitness and reduce adverse effects on autonomic modulation. The establishment of strict protocols in experimental design remains a main challenge in establishing HRV analysis as a robust parameter for evaluating cardiovascular homeostasis.
