The mutations and genes associated with tetracycline resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae are also linked to resistance to other antimicrobials. This means that using doxycycline for postexposure prophylaxis may lead to the development of resistance to other antimicrobials.
We found that tetracycline resistance-associated mutations and genes in Neisseria gonorrhoeae are linked to mutations causing resistance to other antimicrobials. Therefore, the use of doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis may select for resistance to other antimicrobials.
