Vacuum membrane distillation for seawater concentrate treatment coupled with microbubble aeration cleaning to alleviate membrane fouling

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a laboratory-scale vacuum membrane distillation system was used to treat seawater concentrate. The effects of temperature, vacuum pressure, and ionic composition on the system performance were investigated. It was found that the presence or absence of scaling ions significantly affected the system performance. Additionally, microbubble aeration cleaning was proposed as an effective method to mitigate membrane fouling.

Unraveling the effect of inter-basin water transfer on reducing water scarcity and its inequality in China

Siao Sun et al.

Summary: This study conducted the first national assessment of the effect of inter-basin water transfer projects in China on securing water supply in different basins. The results indicated that while water transfer impacted the water supply of 43 out of 76 sub-basins, it had little impact on changing a basin's water scarcity level. Approximately half of China's population benefited from alleviated water scarcity due to water transfer, leading to a reduction in the inequality coefficient.

Omniphobic palygorskite coated Janus membrane with enhanced fouling and wetting resistance for direct contact membrane distillation

Jiahui Zhang et al.

Summary: A novel omniphobic-hydrophilic Janus membrane was developed to address the wetting and fouling issues in traditional hydrophobic membranes during membrane distillation. The membrane exhibited excellent wetting and fouling resistance, robust desalination performance, and stability in treating different types of surfactant-stabilized emulsions, showing great potential for water recovery from industrial wastewater in MD processes.
