A descriptive and comparative analysis on the adsorption of PPCPs by molecularly imprinted polymers

Miaomiao Yu et al.

Summary: Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have shown performance in adsorption capacity, binding affinity, adsorption rate, and compatibility, but may not always outperform traditional adsorbents in removing or detecting PPCPs. MIPs should be used in cases where selectivity is crucial, such as in the recovery of specific PPCPs in environmental sample extraction processes.

N-doped regular octahedron MOF-199 derived porous carbon for ultra-efficient adsorption of oxytetracycline

Rui Han et al.

Summary: Novel porous carbon nanocomposites derived from the carbonization of PVP-doped MOF-199 were successfully prepared for adsorptive removal of oxytetracycline. The product with a pyrolysis temperature of 300 degrees C showed the best adsorption effect. The interactions among pH, Ca2+ strength, humic acid, and OTC concentration were studied, and the adsorption mechanisms were determined to involve electrostatic force, pore adsorption, metal-organic complexation, hydrogen bonding, and 7C-7C interaction/stacking.

Global groundwater vulnerability for Pharmaceutical and Personal care products (PPCPs): The scenario of second decade of 21st century

Rahul Silori et al.

Summary: The global production of PPCPs has increased, resulting in excessive exposure of its metabolites to humans through different aquatic systems. Groundwater contamination by PPCPs is the most concerning threat, especially in developing countries. These contaminants have a significant impact on the antibiotic resistance of soil biotic communities, which may lead to catastrophic and carcinogenic consequences in the future.

A biomass resource strategy for alginate-polyvinyl alcohol double network hydrogels and their adsorption to heavy metals

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: Alginate-based hydrogel adsorbents were developed for efficient removal of heavy metals from wastewater. The hydrogel beads prepared by blending bacterial alginate, polyvinyl alcohol, and chitosan exhibited excellent adsorption performance for Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II). The addition of chitosan greatly improved the specific adsorption capacity for Cr(VI), and the hydrogels maintained a high adsorption capacity for heavy metals even after multiple cycles.

Preparation of composite hydrogel with high mechanical strength and reusability for removal of Cu(II) and Pb(II) from water

Zhengyuan Feng et al.

Summary: This study proposed a new strategy for synthesizing a composite hydrogel, which possesses good reusability, rapid adsorption kinetics, cost-effectiveness, and high adsorption capacity. The experimental results demonstrated that the MBC/CMC/PAA composite hydrogel exhibited stable removal efficiency for Cu2+ and Pb2+ and had a higher allowable compression force. Additionally, this research developed a new method for preparing adsorbents and verified their applicability for the removal of Cu2+ and Pb2+ in real solutions.

Efficient removal of 110mAg nanoparticles (110mAg Nps) in nuclear wastewater by Amines-containing anionic adsorbent PP-g-GMA@EDA

Xiao-han Pan et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel adsorbent containing amines PP-g-GMA@EDA for the efficient removal of the radioactive contaminant Ag-110m nanoparticles (Ag-110m Nps) from nuclear power plant process wastewater. The adsorbent demonstrates better removal efficiency than the commonly used resin IRN9766, particularly at pH 4. The adsorption mechanism is mainly ion exchange, confirmed by XPS analysis. Under optimal pH 4 conditions, the adsorbent achieves 100% removal efficiency with a maximum adsorption capacity of 101.44 mg/g. The adsorbent maintains removal efficiencies above 85% even in the presence of competitive ions. Additionally, 5 wt% ammonia water effectively desorbs Ag Nps from the used adsorbent, ensuring its recyclability.

Facile synthesis of self-healing and layered sodium alginate/polyacrylamide hydrogel promoted by dynamic hydrogen bond

Dingwei Zhao et al.

Summary: A novel method was developed to prepare a semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) hydrogel with improved properties, based on sodium alginate (SA) and polyacrylamide (PAM). The formation mechanism of a layered structure through hydrogen bonds (HBs) and the key role of HBs in enhancing self-healing of the hydrogel were systematically characterized. The semi-IPN structure resulted in a high tensile strength of 266 kPa and broadened the functionality and variety of hydrogels.

Numerical investigation of ibuprofen removal from pharmaceutical wastewater using adsorption process

Yan Cao et al.

Summary: The study developed a mathematical model to investigate the adsorption of ibuprofen from pharmaceutical wastewater into activated carbon and sonicated activated carbon. The research found that increasing particle porosity and ibuprofen diffusion coefficient improved ibuprofen adsorption, while particle diameter had a negative impact on system performance. Additionally, it was observed that particle specifications play an important role in the adsorption process, leading to considerable changes in adsorption amount at different positions in the particle.
