Jianing Li et al.

Summary: The construction of a unique dual Z-scheme photocatalyst CW based on phase junction WO3 and CdS improved the photocatalytic efficiency for the degradation of IMD. The combination of phase junction and dual Z-scheme mechanism enhanced carrier utilization and redox potential, leading to significantly higher k(app) values compared to WO3 and CdS alone for IMD degradation. The trapping experiment and ESR confirmed the dual Z-scheme mechanism, while the analysis using LC-MS and DFT calculations provided detailed degradation pathways for IMD.

Acceleration of levofloxacin degradation by combination of multiple free radicals via MoS2 anchored in manganese ferrite doped perovskite activated PMS under visible light

Yuxuan He et al.

Summary: The nanocomposite of MoS2 embedded manganese ferrite doped perovskite (SrCoO3/MnFe2O4/MoS2) was synthesized for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, showing excellent catalytic performance for levofloxacin (LVF) degradation. The SMM-3 with a mass ratio of 0.3 demonstrated the highest degradation efficiency of 95.1% in 20 minutes. Quenching experiments and EPR analysis revealed that SO4- and HO• played a dominant role in the reaction. The rapid redox cycle of metal ions boosted the PMS activation and promoted the degradation of LVF. DFT calculation and LC-MS/MS analysis revealed the main degradation pathways of LVF. T.E.S.T verified the ecological risks of transformation residues.

Understanding the mechanism of interfacial interaction enhancing photodegradation rate of pollutants at molecular level: Intermolecular π-π interactions favor electrons delivery

Qiang Zhang et al.

Summary: Uncovering the interaction between photocatalyst and reaction substrate, as well as the subsequent electron transfer process, is crucial for achieving effective photodegradation of pollutants. In this study, using the reduced density gradient (RDG) method, we simulated the pi-pi interactions between the photocatalyst g-C3N4 and the pollutant molecule FLU. The results showed that the pi-pi interactions between g-C3N4 and FLU facilitated electron delivery, leading to improved charge separation efficiency and direct oxidation of FLU. Furthermore, we found that the charge transfer rate was determined by the valence band level of g-C3N4 and the EHOMO of FLU, with a deeper valence band position favoring faster charge transfer and enhancing the photocatalytic degradation rate of FLU. Additionally, we proposed the possible degradation pathways of FLU through theoretical calculations and identified intermediates. Our work provides new insights into the degradation of pollutants and the rational design of highly efficient photocatalysts.

C-dots decorated SrTiO3/NH4V4O10 Z-scheme heterojunction for sustainable antibiotics removal: Reaction kinetics, DFT calculation and mechanism insight

Yuanyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel method for removing antibiotic residues in water environments was proposed. A ternary C-dots/SrTiO3/NH4V4O10 catalyst was developed by constructing a hybrid heterojunction of C-dots and STO/NVO through hydrothermal treatment. The synthesized catalyst exhibited high efficiency in degrading sulfamethoxazole, aureomycin hydrochloride, and ciprofloxacin under simulated solar light, with removal efficiencies of 94.7%, 88.3%, and 86.05% respectively. The catalyst also showed great potential for removing mixed antibiotic solutions. The Z-scheme heterojunction with good redox capacity and efficient charge transfer, along with the introduction of C-dots, played a synergistic role in separating and migrating photogenerated carriers. The NH4V4O10 nanosheets provided pre-adsorption sites for antibiotic molecules, enhancing the removal efficiency. The photo-catalytic mechanism and possible degradation pathways were elucidated through HPLC-MS, ESR, and DFT calculations. This study provides insights for designing efficient C-dots mediated Z-scheme heterojunctions for broad-spectrum antibiotic residue remediation.

CuFe2O4/CuO magnetic nano-composite activates PMS to remove ciprofloxacin: Ecotoxicity and DFT calculation

Bo He et al.

Summary: In this study, CuFe2O4 was attached to CuO using hydrothermal and high-temperature calcination methods. The (111) plane of CuO and (112) plane of CuFe2O4 formed a surface heterojunction, which facilitated the adsorption of PMS. The charge transfer and charge density in the CuFe2O4/CuO/PMS system were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The experimental data showed that both nonradical singlet oxygen (1O2) and active radicals (center dot OH, center dot SO4-) were involved in the degradation of CIP. The degradation pathways and intermediates were proposed using Fukui index and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The study also evaluated the bioaccumulation factor and toxic effects of intermediates using toxicity calculation software. CuFe2O4/CuO demonstrated good reusability and stability. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the mechanisms of organic pollutants degradation using Fe-Cu catalyst and achieved a CIP removal rate of 86.67% under optimal conditions.

Ternary Co3O4/CdS/SrTiO3 core-shell pn junctions toward enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production activity

Zhanfen Chen et al.

Summary: A ternary Co3O4/CdS/SrTiO3 core-shell pn junction is fabricated by depositing a CdS shell on the surface of a SrTiO3 nanosphere, followed by growing p-type Co3O4 lamellas on the CdS/SrTiO3 core-shell heterojunction surface. The resulting structure shows a 15-fold enhancement in hydrogen evolution ability compared to single SrTiO3 nanospheres, attributed to the narrow band gaps of CdS and Co3O4 increasing visible light response and efficient charge carrier transfer into water. Additionally, the core-shell structure provides active sites and shortens the photoelectron transport path to improve photocatalytic stability.
