Self-sustained ultrafiltration coupling vermifiltration for decentralized domestic wastewater treatment: Microbial community and mechanism

Jinlong Wang et al.

Summary: The coupling of vermifiltration (VF) and self-sustained ultrafiltration (SUF) in this study achieved effective removal of dissolved pollutants and various microorganisms, while also improving membrane flux to ensure water safety. The synergistic effects among the modified biofouling layer structure, reduction of extracellular polymeric substances, and increase of inorganics contents contributed to the improved membrane flux, with further enhancement observed with the usage of reflux.

Integration of iron-manganese co-oxide (FMO) with gravity-driven membrane (GDM) for efficient treatment of surface water containing manganese and ammonium

Kai Li et al.

Summary: The integration of iron-manganese co-oxide (FMO) with gravity-driven membrane (GDM) effectively treated surface water contaminated by high concentrations of manganese and ammonium. The FMO/GDM system maintained stable permeate flux with enhanced bio-cake layer thickness, achieving high removal rates of 97.7% for manganese and 77.4% for ammonium, showing promise for decentralized purification of contaminated surface water.

Controlling the hydraulic resistance of membrane biofilms by engineering biofilm physical structure

Peter Desmond et al.

Summary: The application of membrane technology for water treatment and reuse is hindered by microbial biofilm growth, which increases resistance and decreases water quality and quantity. In this review, the authors critically assess specific structural features of membrane biofilms that affect hydraulic resistance and discuss how biofilm engineering can be used to decrease resistance.

Presence of powdered activated carbon/zeolite layer on the performances of gravity-driven membrane (GDM) system for drinking water treatment: Ammonia removal and flux stabilization

An Ding et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impacts of pre-deposited adsorbent layers on contaminant removal and membrane fouling in gravity-driven membrane (GDM) filtration. Results showed that pre-deposited PAC layers exhibited higher removal of organics, while zeolites deposited layers had low removal of organics. The presence of mixed adsorbents layers had similar organic removal with PAC and NH4+ removal with zeolite.
