Potocatalytic antifouling membrane with dense nano-TiO2 coating for efficient oil-in-water emulsion separation and self-cleaning

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: A dense rutile nano-titanium dioxide coating was successfully constructed on nonwoven fabric membrane surfaces using a bio-inspired sol-gel method. The coated membrane exhibited improved water affinity, dynamic water super-wetting, water penetration, and underwater oil repellency. The mineralized nano-TiO2 enhanced the hydration layer and prevented fouling by proteins and emulsified oil droplets. The coated membrane also showed high stability and self-cleaning abilities, making it suitable for crude oil/water emulsion remediation.

Treatment of oily wastewaters by highly porous whisker-constructed ceramic membranes: Separation performance and fouling models

Hui Wu et al.

Summary: This study presents a new strategy for highly efficient treatment of both synthetic and real oily emulsions using inexpensive whisker-constructed ceramic membranes. These membranes show exceptional permeance, low energy input, and better oleophobicity in water. The study explores different operating parameters and uses classical Hermia models to understand the fouling mechanism between emulsion droplets and the membrane interface. The membranes also perform well in treating real acidic oily wastewater, outperforming most state-of-the-art ceramic membranes. This work introduces a new structure concept for highly permeable whisker-constructed porous ceramic membranes that can enable more efficient water separation applications.

Cost and efficiency perspectives of ceramic membranes for water treatment

Yingchao Dong et al.

Summary: More robust and efficient ceramic membranes are being increasingly used for water treatment due to their long service lifespan, stability, and anti-fouling properties. However, reducing cost and enhancing efficiency remain challenging issues. This review critically discusses strategies for decreasing membrane cost and improving treatment efficiency, as well as recent advances in membrane development and application in harsh environments. The paper provides valuable insights for the future development and application of ceramic membranes.
