Mathematical analysis of cake layer formation in an ultrafiltration membrane of a phycobiliprotein-containing solution extracted from Nostoc commune

Takanori Hidane et al.

Summary: This study investigated the purification of phycobiliprotein-containing solution extracted from Nostoc commune using ultrafiltration membranes. It was found that the 150-kDa membrane filtered proteins through cake layer formation, while the 10-kDa membrane resulted in pore clogging. The 10-kDa ultrafiltration membrane demonstrated sensitive purification performance of phycobiliprotein.

Development of Antifouling Polysulfone Membranes by Synergistic Modification with Two Different Additives in Casting Solution and Coagulation Bath: Synperonic F108 and Polyacrylic Acid

Katsiaryna S. Burts et al.

Summary: This study proposes a simple and effective technique to improve the antifouling performance of polysulfone membranes by adding a triblock copolymer and polyacrylic acid. The addition of polyacrylic acid results in a thicker and denser selective layer, increasing the hydrophilicity and antifouling properties of the membrane. The modified membranes show improved performance and stability in wastewater treatment and the pulp and paper industry, making them suitable for hemicellulose concentration and purification.

Impact of feed concentration on milk protein fractionation by hollow fiber microfiltration membranes in diafiltration mode

Roland Schopf et al.

Summary: Microfiltration using hollow fiber membranes is not commonly applied in dairy technology, but in this study, it was found to be an effective alternative to other module systems such as ceramic tubular membranes and spiral-wound membranes. The efficiency of fractionation and pre-concentration of the casein fraction before starting diafiltration was optimized at certain process conditions, achieving 80% whey protein depletion after 2.5 diafiltration steps at a concentration factor of 3.

Recovery and Purification of Protein Aggregates From Cell Lysates Using Ceramic Membranes: Fouling Analysis and Modeling of Ultrafiltration

Oliver Birrenbach et al.

Summary: The study investigated the cross-flow ultrafiltration of ovalbumin (OVA) aggregates using a 50 nm cut-off ceramic membrane, revealing a 90% decline in flux within the first 10 minutes. Resistance analysis showed that the main filtration resistance originated from cell lysate in the feed solution, and the intermediate pore blocking model correlated best with the observed filtration data.
