Efficiency of Fe3O4@ZIF-8 for the removal of Doxorubicin from aqueous solutions: equilibrium, kinetics and thermodynamic studies

Gamil A. A. Al-Hazmi et al.

Summary: Inadequate pharmaceutical wastewater treatment leads to the contamination of aquatic environment with anticancer contaminants, posing risks to aquatic life and humans. This research evaluates the effectiveness of a Fe3O4@ZIF-8 nanocomposite as an adsorbent for removing the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin from water. The results show that the proposed treatment method achieves successful elimination of doxorubicin, and the adsorption process is thermodynamically favorable and endothermic.

Adsorptive removal of pharmaceuticals from water using metal-organic frameworks: A review

Lijin Huang et al.

Summary: Pharmaceutical pollution is a major concern, and regulating the concentration of pharmaceuticals in water is crucial for clean water provision. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising adsorbents for removing pharmaceutical contaminants due to their high surface area, controllable structure, and easy modification. Methods for preparing water-stable MOF-based materials and recent advancements in adsorptive removal of pharmaceutical pollutants using functional MOFs are discussed, along with potential interactions such as coordination, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic forces. Future research should focus on creating desirable MOFs and establishing structure-property relationships for improved capture performance.

Boron nitride nanostructures as effective adsorbents for melphalan anti-ovarian cancer drug. Preliminary MIT assay and in vitro cellular toxicity

Ruibao Guo et al.

Summary: A simple and inexpensive method for preparing hexagonal boron nitride was studied, and the adsorption of melphalan anti-cancer drug onto nanostructures was investigated using density functional theory calculations. The results showed that GeB12N12 nanoparticles were more sensitive to the presence of melphalan and could be used as a sensor for detection of the drug in biological systems. Additionally, in vitro studies demonstrated that GeB12N12 nanoparticles were effective in reducing the metabolic activity of OVCAR-3 cancer cells, indicating their potential as a drug delivery vehicle.
