Double-emulsion templated macroporous cellulose microspheres as a high-performance chromatographic media for protein separation

Liangzhi Qiao et al.

Summary: A macroporous cellulose microsphere (MCM) with enhanced mass transfer ability has been successfully developed by using a double emulsion strategy. The macroporous structure of MCM provides fast mass transfer pathways for proteins and increases the accessibility of meso/micropores. The obtained DEAE-MCM exhibits high permeability, fast adsorption rate, and high adsorption capacity for bovine serum albumin, making it a promising material for fast protein chromatography.

Grafting diethylaminoethyl dextran to macroporous cellulose microspheres: A protein anion exchanger of high capacity and fast uptake rate

Liangzhi Qiao et al.

Summary: In this study, a high-performance anion exchanger is developed by grafting DEAE-dextran on macroporous cellulose microspheres. The DEAE-dextran grafted MCMs show a higher adsorption capacity and faster mass transfer rate compared to traditional non-grafted DEAE modified anion exchangers. The results demonstrate the potential of DEAE-dextran grafted MCMs as high-performance ion exchangers.

Summary: This review discusses the effectiveness of polymer-grafted media in creating high-capacity and high-uptake rate protein chromatography. The focus is on ion-exchange chromatography behavior and the limitations of polymer-grafted media in hydrophobic interaction chromatography and affinity chromatography. Recent advances in theoretical and experimental investigations on polymer-grafted media are also highlighted.
