Coagulation behavior of polyaluminum-titanium chloride composite coagulant with humic acid: A mechanism analysis

Beibei Liu et al.

Summary: The hydrolysate species of metal-based coagulants and the binding sites of humic acid are highly dependent on the pH conditions. The study found that oligomeric and mesopolymeric hydrolysates were the dominant species under acid conditions and could complex with the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of humic acid. With the increase of pH, the hydrolysis process of the coagulant and the deprotonation of humic acid were simultaneously underway. Under weakly acid conditions, the complexation of the aluminum hydrolysates with carboxyl groups was improved. Under alkaline conditions, the sweeping effect of amorphous hydroxide dominated the humic acid removals.

Effect of adsorption and coagulation pretreatment sequence on ultrafiltration membrane fouling: Process study and targeted prediction

Meng Chen et al.

Summary: The novel combined pretreatment strategy involving PAC adsorption and coagulation in specific sequences effectively reduces membrane fouling by optimizing floc morphology. The A-C pretreatment method is found to be more conducive for forming larger, stronger flocs with smaller fractal dimensions compared to C-A pretreatment, ultimately improving membrane permeability and fouling reversibility. Irreversible fouling is highly correlated with SUVA values and floc strength during different ultrafiltration cycles, providing valuable insights for diagnosing and prolonging the service life of ultrafiltration membranes.

Summary: The study found that the performance of LNF membranes is influenced by their properties, and LNF membranes suitable for drinking water treatment should have an MWCO of around 1000 Da, with uniform pore sizes and high surface negative charge density. LNF membranes show high selectivity for mineral salts/NOM, effectively removing disinfection byproduct precursors, but may leave small-sized protein-like and other substances in the permeate water.

Ye Yue et al.

Summary: The study investigated the coagulation mechanism for removing humic acid (HA) using Al-13 and optimized its operation. Results showed that preformed Al(13)agg performed better than Al-13 in removing HA, due to its wider pH range and lower residual aluminum levels. The different coagulation mechanisms for Al-13 and Al(13)agg played roles in HA removal, with complexation and charge neutralization dominating for Al-13 and sweep flocculation and adsorption coagulation being the main driving forces for Al(13)agg.
