A rapid, efficient and eco-friendly approach for simultaneous biomass harvesting and bioproducts extraction from microalgae: Dual flocculation between cationic surfactants and bio-polymer

Mohsen Taghavijeloudar et al.

Summary: In this study, the performance of dual flocculation between cationic surfactants and chitosan was evaluated for simultaneous biomass harvesting and bioproducts extraction from microalgae. The synergistic effect of dual flocculation resulted in higher biomass harvesting efficiency, shorter settling time, and lower flocculant dosage. Furthermore, dual flocculation with CTAB surfactant and chitosan achieved higher bioproducts recovery efficiencies at a much lower dosage (100 mg/L).

Relationship between β-Carotene Accumulation and Geranylgeranyl Pyrophosphate Synthase in Different Species of Dunaliella

Lu Xu et al.

Summary: The relationship between beta-carotene synthesis and geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate synthase (GGPS) activity was investigated in 15 species of Dunaliella. The results showed that GGPS enzyme activity has a positive linear relationship with the beta-carotene synthesis content, suggesting the important role of GGPS in beta-carotene synthesis.

Exploiting flocculation and membrane filtration synergies for highly energy-efficient, high-yield microalgae harvesting

Zhenyu Zhao et al.

Summary: High energy consumption during microalgae harvesting is a major obstacle to sustainable production. Membrane filtration is an efficient method for separating microalgae, but fouling is a problem. This study combines flocculation with vibration-assisted filtration to achieve high flux and low energy consumption. Intermittent vibration further reduces energy consumption and prevents microalgae attachment on the vibrating membrane surface.

Submerged hollow-fiber-ultrafiltration for harvesting microalgae used for bioremediation of a secondary wastewater

Song Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the application of microalgae in nutrient removal from wastewater and biofouling control. Results showed high efficiency of microalgae in NH4+-N removal, while fouling was mainly caused by extracellular organic matter and cellular debris. By controlling the TOC content in wastewater and implementing timely backflushing and aeration, the occurrence of biofouling can be effectively reduced.

A comprehensive analysis of an effective flocculation method for high quality microalgal biomass harvesting

Leen Labeeuw et al.

Summary: Flocculation is a cost-effective method for microalgae biomass harvesting, with the efficiency depending on the species involved. Polyacrylamide flocculants showed high efficiency in harvesting, but the impact on different algal species varied in terms of compromised cells and product release. The pilot-scale demonstration using polyacrylamide maintained high efficiency and biomass quality similar to laboratory-scale results, indicating its potential for industrial application without the need for pre-treatment.
